Sgt-Major Rowley
Richard Louis Rowley 1870-1961
a Lancashire Combination referee stationed with the Loyal North
Lancashire Regiment at Fulwood Barracks, Preston from 1905.
D.C.M. in WWI, later promoted to Major and moved to Tidworth
Camp in Wiltshire, where he developed the sports facilities.
Father of Richard William Morris Rowley 1904-84, born at
Enniskillen in Ireland whilst his was father stationed there
Played for Swindon Town, Southampton, Tottenham H., Preston N.E.
and Ireland by virtue of his birth
Squadron Leader in R.A.F. and in WWII, like his father awarded
the D.C.M.
In retirement he was Secretary of the Hampshire Cricket
Supporters Club.
Rowley Sr. (the referee) once struck a fellow spectator in The
Dell stands, who had dared to criticise his son.
The incident was reported to the Board, but the directors
decided not to pursue the matter.
His younger brother, Louis, (1909-40) played three times for
Southampton Reserves in 1926-27 as a winger.
Also in the R.A.F. in WWII he was reported "missing" in October
1940

Talking of referee's hitting people. 25 Feb 1893, Accrington v
Everton (which Everton won 3:0).
It was reported that having had a foul awarded against him in
the first half, Johnny Holt reportedly 'turned to the referee
and commented on the ruling in a language more forcible than
polite'
Apparently, the referee, Fitzroy Norris then hit Johnny Holt in
retaliation, and subsequently apologised to Holt for doing so at
half-time!

The Southampton born Child was my best candidate in terms of
date but not area. Census details you have found confirm him.

I can answer a couple of those:
I Josephs = Isaac
W Musther = William
I also have details of a John (Jack) Adams, who was from
Birmingham and refereed 11 Burnley games between 1897 and 1906,
but the only other Adams' were both Arthur (father & son) from
the Nottingham area.

There was another John "Jack" Adams on the F.L. list - a
supplementary for just two seasons 1911-12 & 1912-13
He was from West Bromwich and not to be confused with the same
named referee from Birmingham who retired from the list in 1907
aged 51
The Nottingham home town though points to the better known
Arthur Adams who refereed the 1913 F.A. Cup Final
Isaac Josephs full name was Isaac Philip Josephs and he was
known as Philip. He was from East Boldon (sp) and one of only
two Jewish referees
on the F.L. list at the time. The other being his brother Arnold
who refereed the 1929 F.A. Cup Final
William Musther was another North-Easterner and he was well
travelled. Born in Sunderland, he married in Hampshire, refereed
whilst
living in Honor Oak London SE 23, and died in Glamorgan. He
refereed two overseas internationals too, France v Switzerland
1923 and
Belgium v Netherlands 1932
