Referees for Everton matches - Looking for first names
DIR By: steveflanuk
Date: April 12, 2022, 6:38 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Good afternoon all.
I was wondering whether anyone would be able to provide the fist
names of the following referees for matches involving Everton.
I've managed to get quite a few from this forum and various
other club history sites, etc. however, the following are still
outstanding.
The list gives the name of the referee, and then [in square
brackets] the number of Everton matches they officiated, the
date of their first EFC match and the date of their last EFC
match (if they officiated in more than 1 game). I've broken it
down into more sizeable chunks (based on the date of their first
EFC match). Any help is greatly appreciated, and many thanks in
advance.

John - thank you so much for all of these, very much
appreciated.
Yes, I was expecting some typo's - obviously from slightly dodgy
newspaper scans/my eyesight!![emoji15]
T. Hancock (08.01.1927 in FA Cup v Poole at Goodison Park).
This was taken from the match programme:
Ref: T.Hancock (Burslem)
Lines: T.J.Botham and J.Mellor

One more for the post-1900 list:
Sgt Major Rowley [2: 03.02.1912 - 08.02.1912] - took charge of
both FA Cup matches against Bury (1:1 draw at Goodison Park,
followed by a 6:0 victory again at Goodison Park as Bury agreed
to switch venues for the replay for a guaranteed income)

John
Once again you have been a star - thank you so much. You've
brought my list down to 11 names now (inc Sgt Major Rowley)
With regards to H.J.Miller, yes the date is correct. The name,
obviously not from any match reports I'm aware of, would have
been taken from either the programme (which I can't locate - so
not that), or from newspaper fixtures, etc (I can't remember if
it was a list of appointments from Athletic News), so thank you
for the clarification.
EW Child appears to be Edward William Child.
After looking through birth registrations for someone aged
between 30 and 40 at the time and who was living in the Manor
Park area at the time of the 1911 Census, we find the following:
Edward William Child (aged 40), born in Southampton (birth
registered in Q4 1870)
Living at 7 Wanstead Park Avenue, Manor Park, East Ham
Occupation given as Elementary School Techer
Married to Clara Child nee Watkins (marriage registration says
they were married in Fulham in 1895 [registered in Q2 1895])
If he is the right man, then my list is now down to 10, so once
again John, a huge thank you.
