What may be more pertinent to this discussion is that,
considering there are Manchester United fans in every corner of
the globe, I cant recall any sg1 referee who has debarred
himself from refereeing at OT by declaring an allegiance to the
club
I wonder if that is partially down to them going into refereeing
so young, they may had the passion for football but more for
playing and not watching. A lot of them seem to have grown up
watching their local non league games, maybe they had family
connections to them?
There are also a significant number from Yorkshire, so if they
want to avoid being disowned by their families supporting Man
Utd really isn't an option 😂
On visits to Old Trafford often hear away fans sing.. on the
motorway m6 south see you later..intimating heading back to
London.

Andy Madley and Jarred Gillet have swapped games
Gives Madley chance to drive from Stockley Park to Norwich mid
afternoon rather than late at night
Or the next morning, the day of the game.

I often wonder if the SG refs who say they support non-league
teams do this so they can referee any game in the PL in theory,
when we all know they don't actually follow the said team.
I'm sure if Jarred Gillet has the nous about him, he listed the
team he supports as some NSW/QLD NPL side, knowing full well it
matters not a jot. [emoji23]

It is strange that I don't remember a single referee who has
supported one of the big teams and been unavailable to referee
their games, considering the amount of people who do support
those teams
What would be interesting is if a referee supported liverpool,
could be referee everton or united

Because they don't declare them to the media, they declare them
to their bosses. And if they declare a team that has a main
local rival they cannot officiate them, e.g. Michael Oliver
cannot referee Sunderland. Think I'm right in saying that Craig
Pawson can't do either Sheffield team as he supports United.
Perhaps it comes down to the fact that many true football fans
support their home town clubs. They might not be classed as
"big clubs" for the likes of Oliver, Pawson, Atkinson, Marriner,
Madley, Moss, Taylor, etc, but not everyone decides to support
the team that was winning most when they were young. And it
could be argued that Friend did declare a big team, given they
won the league whilst he was an EPL referee.
