Both clubs would be very unhappy if they did not get a top
referee. Call it arrogance or respect or something in between
but given its timing (not many games to go) and its significance
on the title race it surely has to go to a FIFA referee? Taylor
or Oliver would be the safe bet. We shall shortly see who gets
the nod.

> Have to politely disagree re Gillett. He is a very good ref
but he's only reffed 6 PL games so far this season (Taylor has
22) and is inexperienced in this league -no way is he ready for
a game of this magnitude.

> This is simply a massive top flight game in terms of
importance to the title race in a number of seasons so I think
it has to go to our number 1/2 ref (Taylor or Oliver).

That’s why I mentioned the point of “due to the mis-management
of the Select Group” - JG should have been used a lot lot more
than he has done higher up based on his experience and standing
prior to coming to the UK.
Could you imagine Oliver or Taylor being told to sit on their
backside or being sent to Wagga Wagga Rovers on the FFA Second
Division every week?
Agree with you 100%. He is one of the best refs we have at our
disposal and should have been used far more often.
I remember him reffing the Brentford playoff semi final vs
Bournemouth at the end of last season which was one of the most
difficult games you could imagine refereeing with 4 or 5 KMI and
getting all of them spot on, as well as great man management
throughout.
Agree. That was a high class performance in a game that could
easily have got out of control, with my team not covering
themselves in glory and losing their heads. He should be getting
more Prem games, though this one probably too high profile at
this stage.

Arguably one could say that Andre Marriner will probably have
the more significant contribution than Taylor.

Paul Tierney is surprising! First time being involved in a
Liverpool game since Spurs

The least surprising event since Tuesday succeeded Monday in the
calendar of the week ! Arguably it could be said that Paul
Tierney's appointment as VAR has an equal weight to that of
Taylor's.

I found Tierney's appointment as VAR a bit more surprising. Is
this the first involvement Tierney has had in a Liverpool game
since Spurs in December? Obviously at some point it would be
suitable for him to officiate Liverpool again but not sure this
is the best game for that. It feels like unnecessary baggage.

It is the first game since, if he makes a controversial decision
against Liverpool there will be issues

It's not like Anthony Taylor has refereed Man City 30 odd times
before or Man Utd 40 odd times before or Liverpool 50 odd times
before now is it... Same tired comments every time 🙄

If they keep cancelling flights etc. they could keep these guys
in Manchester and that would stop any arguments about
favouritism etc.
I reckon that bmb would be happy too!

Interesting you should mention that as over the last 2 weekends
the NH rugby leagues have had a number of cross border
appointments.
2 weeks ago it was a number of TMOs and this week saw some
referees join them.
AND they were given decent games
Christophe Ridley took charge of Munster vs Leinster
Mathieu Raynal was on L Irish v Quins and Nika the Georgian did
Bordeaux v La Rochelle in the Top 14 evening KO.
Why cant football do the same and break some of this
parochial/political barrier?
Oh and none of the games went badly so no need to trot out
cliches of "they dont understand our game"
