Re: Who will get the Man City vs Liverpool game?

What is so special about Manchester City v Liverpool?
It is just another game of football in the Premier League with 3
points for the winners and nothing for the losers.
The officials at SG1 level are all professional and have
achieved their status through their achievements in the past. In
other words, they are all deemed to be fit to referee any match
in the Premier League, in spite of what certain managers say in
order to influence things. We have even had managers stating
that 'so and so referee' must not be allocated games involving
their club!
This coming weekend sees matches between Everton and Manchester
United, Watford v Leeds, Norwich v Burnley which all have a
bearing on possible relegation and are every bit as important as
Manchester City v Liverpool, however, those in charge of
allocations will be influenced because they think that this
match is more important than any other. Simple fact is that it
isn't ---it is just another game of football!

David Hutchinson Brilliant referee and good bloke. Ran the

That’s why I mentioned the point of “due to the mis-management
of the Select Group” - JG should have been used a lot lot more
than he has done higher up based on his experience and standing
prior to coming to the UK.
Could you imagine Oliver or Taylor being told to sit on their
backside or being sent to Wagga Wagga Rovers on the FFA Second
Division every week?
Agree with you 100%. He is one of the best refs we have at our
disposal and should have been used far more often.
I remember him reffing the Brentford playoff semi final vs
Bournemouth at the end of last season which was one of the most
difficult games you could imagine refereeing with 4 or 5 KMI and
getting all of them spot on, as well as great man management
throughout.

Edited out... By your reckoning no game is more significant than
another? Why doesn't Tony Harrington referee it then
Man City vs Liverpool will almost certainly decide the title
whereas Everton vs Man United won't decide anything- that has no
more impact than Wolves vs Burnley 3 months ago? It doesn't

I think the 1989 argument is a bit of a red herring.
Firstly the appointments were made on a monthly basis, several
weeks in advance. A monthly booklet would be posted (how
quant!) around 3rd-5th of each month for the following month.
Secondly, the 1989 game was rearranged (due to Hillsborough) so
the original game would have scheduled for April. That means
the appointment was public knowledge in early March and made
some time in mid to late February.
At that point it was not at all obvious that it would be the
title decider it turned out to be. Given today's approach to
making appointments, the 1989 appointment could well have been
different.
Respectfully I must deny that my herring is red. Yes, the
appointments were made in advance but looking at the table it
was clear that the Liverpool v Arsenal match was going to have a
huge bearing on the destination of the title if not the actual
decider between those two teams. Therefore the appointing powers
could have put a 'big' name on the match, George Courtney, Brian
Hill, Joe Worrall. Neil Midgley, John Martin, Phil Don but they
chose David Hutchinson.
Going back a little earlier in the mid 1970s, such a
distribution of appointments system was taken to a point of
'Reductio ad absurdum' when ACF Turvey was appointed to Arsenal
v Liverpool ( though not a title decider at that point in the
season ) I was there and it was dreadful to behold.
Fair point, but there is still some part of your herring that is
rouge.
When the original appointment was made (mid-February) the game
was - as you say - going to have a "huge bearing on the
destination of the title". By the time it was actually
re-arranged it had become the title decider. Had today's
low-risk, "just-in-time" appointing methods been in operation in
1989, then one of those esteemed names you cited would have got
the game.

The big day tomorrow at 4pm
We should have a good idea after the europa league games
If no Oliver or he gets a conference league game I think it’s
him otherwise it’s Taylor

Won't it be midday?
I'm not sure the EL appointments will tell us that much either
way to be honest. Perhaps if Oliver has a EL game then it might
make him slightly less likely, although Thurs-Sun has certainly
happened plenty. But I don't think Oliver being absent would
make him any more likely for the City V Liverpool game.

Perhaps just a hint of vermillion around the gills ! My
contention is that a match with " huge bearing on the
destination of the title" might be expected to go to a big
hitter and it didn't. By the time it became the title-decider it
was a brave strategy to go with the original appointment. If the
"just in time " method had been in operation then it might have
gone to one of the esteemed names or it might not; we shall
never know.

It is arguably the biggest Premier League game of the season, of
the last several seasons for that matter. The winner will
almost certainly win the league, it doesn't come much bigger
than that.
It will absolutely go to one of the two FIFA elite referees, and
rightly so.
