Marriner did Liverpool vs Arsenal just before the int break
Will 100% be Oliver or Taylor
Oliver would be the sensible choice as Taylor is from Manchester
not that should affect anything and the fact Taylor has done
that game at the etihad a few times recently

If the PGMOL wasn’t so poorly mis-managed - it would have been a
good game to get Gillet on

I’ll be shocked if it’s not one of Taylor or Oliver. For me,
Pawson has had a decent season, Atkinson and Marriner both go
about the business unnoticed and would be a great choice for two
teams that want to play flowing football. The point about
Gillett is an interesting one. He strikes me as a ref who likes
to let play develop and not get overly involved which could well
be perfect for this match. It always seems as though Riley
forgets the experience he already brings with him! I can’t wait
for the day the head of the SG shares the appointments around
more evenly 🙏

Have to politely disagree re Gillett. He is a very good ref but
he's only reffed 6 PL games so far this season (Taylor has 22)
and is inexperienced in this league -no way is he ready for a
game of this magnitude.
This is simply a massive top flight game in terms of importance
to the title race in a number of seasons so I think it has to go
to our number 1/2 ref (Taylor or Oliver).

Well, I'm going to be a bit controversial here. I really dislike
the current practice of always picking the same two referees, as
good as Oliver and Taylor are, for the 'big' matches with plenty
riding upon the result. Perhaps it won't happen this time and
there will be a surprise with Tierney or Pawson being appointed
but I am sure there won't be.
Before SG1 and SG2 or indeed even before the PL was in
existence, 'big' matches were shared around far more equitably.
A perfect case in point being Liverpool v Arsenal in 1989 when
the old Division 1 title was at stake. That match did not go to
one of the FIFA big hitters but to David Hutchinson who made a
very good job of it.
I really think that at least half of the present SG1 are
perfectly capable to refereeing this match very well but the
appointing powers seem to be fixated on the view that only
Taylor and Oliver are appropriate for such a fixture.

I understand that but the biggest game of the season should be
refereed by the best referee. Pawson maybe but he did city this
week so no chance
Paul Tierney hasn’t done liverpool for a while but we all know
why. I think Klopp might have a few issues if he was to referee.
Also he had history with city and Merseyside teams in recent
times

I always compare it to business. If you have a chance of
winning the biggest contract your company is ever going to win
you don't send in your fifth or sixth best salesman, you send in
the very top man (or woman). The game next Sunday is arguably
the biggest game in World club domestic football this season, so
you absolutely should appoint your top "salesman" to the game,
and that means Oliver or Taylor.

I agree it can be good to spread the appointments out and you
want to develop some of the lesser experienced referees over
time. I definitely think there's much the PGMO can improve on in
this regard (although it is worth pointing out Tierney refereed
Liverpool V City this season and Pawson refereed City V
Liverpool last season.)
But I don't think this is the sort of game for any risk. It's
the two teams involved in the title race with only a short
amount of the season to go so I think absolutely the sort of
match where one of the top few best performing referees in this
season's merit table should get it. If that's Oliver and Taylor,
then it should be one of them.

I appreciate the arguments made about the best referees doing
the most important matches, an argument that presumably didn't
apply in 1989 though.
The choice of Oliver or Taylor then is predicated on the
assumption that they are clearly superior to Dean, Atkinson and
Marriner to name but three. I am sure that is how the appointing
powers see it, I am not quite so sure myself.
A real curved ball would be to appoint Moss, if he is available.
He has received such unlikely big appointments over the years
that it would surprise but not shock

John Moss! I think he is past it now and would struggle with
this game, same with Atkinson and Dean, Marriner is the best for
me but Oliver is the clear standout.
