I think a yellow card is justifiable in this situation -
deliberately pushes it away from the opposing player who is
going to get a chance

I've always liked Mike Dean as a referee. He just seems to get
most of his decisions right. On the field he appears quite
stentorian, off the field, he is one of the most amusing and
convivial referees around who always shows great concern for his
fellow officials when they fall into difficult times.
Mike though is no spring chicken. When he leaves the SG1 list
then one of the " big hitters" will be gone and Martin Atkinson
is of similar vintage. I hope replacements will be found to make
confident appointments to very high profile matches. I am not
sure that Pawson is quite there yet; Kavanagh is clearly a
hugely promising prospect. Further down the chain, I expect Rob
Jones, Darren England and possibly John Brooks to be the next
"big hitters"

I sincerely hope you weren't disagreeing with the fact that Mr
Cann is one of the finest assistants we have produced in
England.
I think you are quite aware which of your two statements I
disagree with ;)
It would be good if you explained why you feel this rather than
just pressing Disagree on the myriad of positive posts like
someone with an agenda against the referee in question.
If I explain my opinion I am castigated for doing so , I’m not
allowed a different opinion to others without running the risk
of a multitude of complaints to bmb . I will stick to agree and
disagree it’s safer and a damn sight less stress and hassle.

Although you insist on making yourself look a bit of a dick by
continually clicking on the 'disagree' icon without explaining
your reason(s)?

Ok so I will reply , my tin hat is going on .....
I understand that I am absolutely in the minority and I accept
that but surely a forum is for different views?
I think mike dean is a poor referee and my reasoning is thus ..
he is a very experienced excellent decision maker but in my
opinion robotic , everything is black and white he shows no
understanding of the game and far from being brave and not
shirking decisions he makes the decision that will attract the
most attention be that positive or negative, his demonstrative
signals are all limelight seeking his strutting about ,waving
players away all in my opinion come accross as an official who
is in the game for as much attention as he can get , now in my
opinion that is exactly the opposite of a good referee , there
is much more to refereeing than making correct decisions, the
best referees communicate with players , manage them and seek to
run the game with the minimum of fuss , mike I’m afraid appears
to look for controversy . I will finish by saying I’m sure he
is. A nice guy and nothing I’ve said is an attempt to slight his
character I know many who change when they cross the white line
, mike dean just does not referee in a style I like that’s it no
agenda. I don’t want to get into rows with people on here , this
forum is full of strong characters who are very quick to
‘correct’ people I have no axe to grind with any of you and
would sincerely wish that we could all co exist with our
differences, I enjoy the forum but will admit that at times
keeping my views to myself would be far easier. Although a
little early I wish you all a pleasant festive season.
Kind regards
Nick
Ps
I will let the personal insult slide .

I agree about his style nick and can see why people don’t like
him/his style. Surely the best referee is the one who - more
often than not - gets the big decisions right regardless of his
manner of refereeing. We all have different styles and mine is
more lenient than mike’s but I don’t agree he is a poor referee
because he doesn’t “manage” games as much

Plym-Nick, you make your argument in a very reasonable and
cogent way although personally I do not accept your conclusions.
Many referees allow their decisions to be influenced by what
they can "sell" and what will not attract too much anger. Mike
Dean is not one such. He calls it as he sees it regardless of
the consequence of others opinions of him. When I was plying the
refereeing trade ( albeit at a much, much junior level to Mike
Dean ) we were always encouraged to referee in a style which
suited us and not try to ape anyone else whose style didn't. I
would never referee in the style of Mike Dean ( my role models
were Ron Challis and Joe Worrall ) but it works for him. I
believe that he is quite popular among many of the players; that
maybe because he has been around at the top level for so long
and also because he is firm but fair and they always get what
they expect.

Mike Dean seems to be a very marmite referee, you either love
him or you hate him. I Actually like his no nonsense approach,
It Made him one of the country's best for so long. I personally
think it's rather effective, especially in games like the north
London derby. He doesn't Shirk the big decisions either.
We all referee differently, A lot of our top referees down the
years have had different styles, and it's worked out for a lot
of them. I prefer to judge referee's on there ability to make
the right decision personally, and apply the laws consistently
and fairly.
