I don't know if it's still the case but in times past a retiring
referee would be asked if there was a particular place where
they would like their last match to be and who they might like
as their Assistants and 4th to be.
I don't think there was ever any guarantee that wishes would
necessarily be accommodated but they often were and the home
club would make a special effort to look after a referee's
family and guests.
Of course now there is SG1 and SG2 the referee"s choices would
be limited to particular cohorts.

If that is still allowed, Dean could choose Arsenal. There's a
video on youtube of him speaking at a RA meeting where he states
it's his favourite Premier League ground and how well they
accommodated him and his family for his 500th PL game. They have
Everton on the last day, so if Arsenal are already secured
European football and Everton are safe (or already down!), I
could see him getting that fixture. Leicester v Southampton has
some nice symmetry as said already.

I am not at all surprised to read of Mike Dean's appreciation
for Arsenal and the hospitality they afforded his family. There
is a Referee Liaison person at Arsenal whose task it is to
ensure that Match Officials and their guests are well looked
after and I can speak from experience that they certainly are.
The person who has taken this role for many years is the former
National List referee, Tony Ward. A more pleasant, courteous and
charming man would be hard to find and his care of the Match
Officials' guests is exemplary.

Agree, Tony is a top guy, and a former Premier League referee
himself. When Arsenal aren't at home you'll find him running
hospitality in Wingate & Finchley's boardroom.

I believe the Premier League was formed in 1992 which was the
beginning of Tony Ward's last season on the National List. I
think specifically and exclusively designated Premier League
referees came in at a later date but in that 1992/1993 season,
Tony Ward's last, he was sufficiently senior and experienced to
have received a number of Premier League appointments I am sure.
He always got a fair number of old Division 1 appointments. I
think he was unlucky not to have received any notable Cup Finals
( unless others know differently ) I first recall him running
the line at Portman Road, a dapper man with wavy jet black hair
and a full moustache. I shared that with him and he was very
amused bearing in mind his current colouring and hairstyle,
though this was about 3 or 4 years ago.

I'm a bit late to the party, but I don't feel like I'm
exaggerating Mike Dean is one of the greatest referees the
country will produce in my lifetime.
In my mind there are two types of great referees: those with the
physical presence to demand respect from players (Webb, Byrch)
and those who can control a match through the sheer force of
their personality - Dean for me was the perfect example of the
latter type.
Yes he was demonstrative and over the top, but there are few
referees who I would trust more with a big game; he had a
brilliant ability to 'read' a game and help it to be the best
possible spectacle. He very often got the big decisions right,
and made brave calls when others would turn a blind eye. He was
one of the best identifiers of Serious Foul Play out there - I
remember his red card during the Eduardo leg break, which seems
obvious with the passage of time but was a very difficult
decision in real time.
I never really understood the criticism of his mannerisms; it
was clear that he loved being out on the pitch and I'd much
rather have a referee with personality than a PGMO clone with no
empathy with the players or the game. For me the main sadness
was that he never achieved his potential on the international
stage. I think his demonstrative style would have made him a
formidable international referee, and I could easily imagine him
managing Champions League encounters with the same good humour
and skill as Cakir in his prime.
I hope that he has a wonderful retirement - as others have said
he has a lot to offer refereeing and football more broadly!
