Interesting Telegraph article -
1. Says he reffed 2 FA Cup Finals in 2008 and 2011, which is
wrong
2. Riley persuaded him to stay an extra season so newbies covid
get extra experience. Is this why Harrington, Brookes and
Salisbury have had a massive 7 PL games between them all season?
3. The Elite Referee Development Plan mentioned. I must have
missed talk of this. Where are these talented refs coming from
and how does Riley plan to develop them fully when he doesn’t
seem to be able to develop those he already has?
I see there are some suggestions elsewherevthat Dean may be in
line for I’m a Celebrity in the future but I wonder if golf may
also play a significant part of his future

Hope he's not seen as the last referee that didn't come out of
the moulding shop. I can't think of many other characters at the
moment whereas in years gone by there were lots of them. A safe
pair of hands that will be missed although time catches up on
everybody. Hope he has a good retirement whether it's in the VAR
booth or elsewhere.

I wonder if he will get a last north london derby or merseyside
derby.
Aston Villa v Spurs april 9th is another poss for Mike.
I would go for man city v villa as final day game for him, could
be a good omen for city, i think mike
Did the famous last day game of city v qpr 2011/12 season when
city beat utd to the title and the famous commentary from martin
tyler “ i swear you will never see anything like this again “.

I think referees often get a gentle final game rather than one
that is a title decider for instance. Obviously it's too early
to predict what games will especially matter on final day. I
hope he gets some good appointments and big games between now
and the end of the season though.
I wonder how much BT pay for their refereeing pundits compared
to VAR roles? I think Mike Dean could be good in that role and
we could certainly do with someone other than Peter Walton
sitting on the fence every week.

A playoff final at Wembley would be a fitting way for Mike to
end his career. He has not done a L1 playoff final, but I fancy
the Championship Final , AFCB Bournemouth v Sheffield United or
Huddersfield (assuming Luton go up with Fulham), with Mike
dressed in stunning yellow to mark his farewell! [emoji12]

I have always liked Mike Dean as a referee precisely because he
does not come from modern 'referee central casting' but uses his
particular traits in the pursuit of his officiating. Yes, he
does somewhat draw attention to himself, rather akin to Clive
Thomas in days of yore but the difference is with Dean it is
entirely natural and with Thomas it was manufactured. Dean has
personality whereas Thomas seemed to have ego.
I also know, from friends who have been on the National List,
that if anything goes wrong or there is some particularly piece
of trenchant or unfair criticism of them in the press, Mike Dean
is just about the first to phone and offer his support. This
speaks volumes about the man.
I hope the game finds the right platform for him to pass on his
wealth of experience and talent, not perhaps as an administrator
which I don't think would suit him but certainly as a
coach/mentor.
I have written this before on RTR but about 20 years ago Dean
refereed at Luton when Lennie Lawrence was the manager. I was
there, Luton lost and Dean refereed very well. Lawrence's post
match comment " good referee that bloke, he's one of the very
few b*****s who actually understands the game ". Perhaps the
best tribute.

Agree with this, which is one reason he won't be a replacement
for Riley unless they create a new admin assistant role for it.
He doesn't strike me as they type who will happily sit in an
office chatting with someone about the budget requirements, the
coaching duty rosters or whatever pen-pushing elements there are
to the role. I just can't see him making nice with the
shareholders. I think (I don't know him so could be wrong) that
he'd enjoy being more hands on and would probably make a very
good coach/mentor.
Of course he may well have had enough of the politics and
[inserts tongue in cheek] spend the rest of his days on the
terraces watching his beloved Liverpool with his sons in between
golfing on the Riviera [removes tongue from cheek] [emoji11]

I wonder if Mike Dean will referee Leicester v Southampton as
his final premier league game.
His debut in the premier league was this fixture in 2000 i
believe, could be wrong.
It would of course not be the same ground as leicester played at
filbert street in 2000.
