5. He wasn't celebrating Spurs goal but the sublime advantage he
played that led to it!

Being a Villa fan watching at the time, being disappointed that
a goal had been scored against us, i thought it was a brilliant
advantage and had difficulty in explaining to villa fans what he
was celebrating.
I remember in my very early days and often on the line in the
county league where i am from, a certain referee would sometimes
after a goal had been scored give the clenched fists
gesticulation to his assistants (linesmenin those days) it was
his communication to us to have a form firm grip of the game.

The last one he seemed to still be playing advantage when they
lost the ball, could have given it.

Mike has been an immense servant to the refereeing profession &
his personality & character have shone through.
He was never afraid to make big decisions & yes, he arguably
courted attention at times with his body language, but his
enthusiasm for the game was clearly evident & this has been a
huge factor in his longevity by setting records that will take
some beating. Michael Oliver may pass it, but will his career
last as long?
It's clear that Mike has divided opinion in his career, but I'm
firmly in the supporting camp. He's been one of the big
characters of the soap opera that is the Premier league & has
been a quality ref.
You have to say that he wasn't absolutely top drawer in the
manner of a Webb, Oliver or even Clattenburg, but he has worked
at his craft & deserves his accolades. However, I'd argue that
his retirement is probably 2 years overdue as it is a younger
man's game now & his form has dipped, but it's been good that he
has been able to leave "on his terms" & use his expertise in a
specialist VAR role. He deserves it. Good luck in retirement
Mike.

I love the one where he is gutted it doesn't pan out. Always

game.
