I wish Mike all the best for the future.
He certainly has been one of the best referees in england over
his spell with the whistle.
May spend more time caddying in the future, something he loves
and something some of the young ladies on the tour
Have enjoyed having him on the bag.
The latter comes from a friend of a friends daughter who he has
assisted.
Hope he used as a var, but then again that is whether he feels
that is where he will be comfortable.
Def needs to be involved somewhere mentoring if he wishes to go
down that route.
Well done mike, thanks your service over the years.

I would think he probably would although may instead be used as
a coach/mentor/observer instead.

I think a number of the naysayers will only realise how good he
is after he's not refereeing anymore

Peter Walton has penned a very good article in today's Times in
which he confirms what we've already guessed, Mike Dean is
retiring at the end of the season. He is apparently in talks to
continue as a full time VAR. Quote: 'Mike is a character, and he
does things which come naturally to him. He doesn't have to work
at his body language, his facial expressions or his one-liners,
and he uses that to good effect...there is no hidden agenda with
Mike'.
Stats quoted with the article: Age 53, first PL game - 2000, PL
games - 553, Yellow cards - 2026, red cards - 114, all PL
records and no doubt to be added to before the curtain comes
down on his PL career.

On his day an excellent referee. Never afraid to shirk the big
decisions right or wrong and a top bloke. It’s defo the right
time for him to go base on fitness and performances which have
certainly dipped this season

I have to make one of my very few comments here on this forum
just to wish Mike Dean all the best in retirement. It can be
difficult transitioning from work life into retirement
especially considering the fact that you work in front of tens
of thousands of people and where you efforts are scrutinised to
the nth degree. So I sincerely hope he transitions well.
He always struck me as a good and firm referee and latterly as
someone who has a personality which translated onto the field.
He is what you see as Peter Walton writes, you know where you
are with him. Normally no referee retires at the height of his
powers because age does catch up with you but I am delighted he
was able to last one more season and referee in front of full
crowds. A job well done.

1. his sons are not liverpool season ticket holders
2. He used to be a very good referee

Mike Dean would definitely be in the group of my all time
favourite PL referees and I think a strong contender for the
very best.
We obviously don't know the merit tables but I'd guess there's a
good chance he's topped it, or at least come in the top few,
more than any other PL referee. He's refereed three Championship
play-off finals, which I think might be a record, and did the
famous Man City V QPR game in 2012.
I remember posting around 10 years ago on here that if my team
were involved in a major one-off game then I'd want Dean to
referee. He was always strong in his decision making, and had a
high level of accuracy too, but could also let games flow.
For some reason, a game between Newcastle V Arsenal in 2007/08
especially stands out in my mind - he showed a yellow card to
Sagna, quite correctly, for feigning contact near his own
penalty area, showed a yellow card to Shay Given for coming up
to the halfway line to remonstrate over a decision, and a couple
of yellow cards I think for off the ball incidents after good
advantages. They seemed the sort of yellow card incidents many
referees would miss or let go. Even Andy Gray was impressed!
