Definite RC or harsh? Discuss (as they used to say in school
exams!). (Incident in video at the start of the article.)

Good decision
I trust first white player in to Collum received at least a YC
for bumping the ref.

Co - Commentator: "it looked high, it looked reckless, it looked
dangerous, give me a replay"... sees replay "ridiculous
decision". but with the one view the pundit had, he obviously
thought it was red
Is it any wonder football referees are maligned every week.
Now go to rugby (co) commentators, they have training with
referees every month about the laws of the game. never undermine
them and almost always state what the sanction is going to be
before the referee gives it. A couple of weeks ago they weren't
happy with the ref or TMO on a decision and their words were "oh
dear, that is just blatantly wrong, but we all have bad days at
the office once in a while".
We have Mr Gallagher on every Monday giving the referees
viewpoint of decisions on Sky, but wally Wooten has to try and
catch him out and we have to put up with Sue and Stephen's view
on each incident "well I thought....". In the words of The Rock
"It doesn't matter what you thought", that is what was given and
that is the reasoning as to why it was given. Stop making out
that the official is the bad guy/girl. Give me patience. Rant
over

Some of the flips the Scottish commentary teams are capable of,
are quite astounding. Why isn't it acceptable to be unsure, and
only make up your mind once you've seen a proper replay? These
commentators behave like their making YouTube reaction videos.
The real-time broadcast camera shows high force and brutality,
but the point of contact is unclear from video.
There's a still photo from the game that clearly shows contact
above the boot (noting, that still are only useful when the
wider context is already determined). When you couple those
together, it's obviously a brilliant decision by Mr Collum.
Scottish punditry, however, nil points.

Mad tackle for Beavis Mugabe to make in first minute (or any
minute). Definite red, no complaints, Issue is identical tackle
5 minutes later by Jake Carroll. We really should have been down
to 9 men after 6 minutes. Absolutely no consistency from Willie
Collum. They are either both red or both yellow. Not one of
each. The actions of the Hibs players bumping into ref demanding
red cards was not nice to see either at Mugabe's tackle. As for
the game, Hibs were there for the taking, we performed really
well playing whole game with ten and had chances to take it to
extra time. As usual Motherwell FC find new ways to lose

I disagree. The tackles aren't identical, though they are
similar.
The second challenge has the player with his foot on the floor.
The guidance by the SFA and, conveniently, UEFA, is that such
tackles are treated differently.
In short, point of contact on boot = almost always a yellow
card, unless sufficient brutality is shown.
Point of contact (studs showing such as the Mugabe tackle) on
the ankle/leg/sock and above the boot = a red card.
Jake Carroll's challenge wasn't leading with studs, and his foot
was on the ground. It's a high yellow, but correctly not a red
card (according to the SFA's own guidance).
I agree with you on the Hibs' reaction. Also disappointing was
Alexander's defence of the indefensible after the game. Well
into classic Wenger territory there.

Thanks for that explanation Affy Moose. I can understand now the
subtle differences in the decision making. For the uninitiated
onlooker they do look almost identical!!

Yeah of course. I do agree - for those not involved in
refereeing (and this imo is one of football's greatest
weaknesses) the subtle differences in some Laws, or application,
can be difficult to see. Even within refereeing in Scotland,
though the guidance that officials is consistent across all
levels (e.g. monthly association training, and pre-season LotG
changes), the level and intensity of training and ongoing
support varies massively. That's not exactly a profound reveal,
but if even qualified match officials have different exposure,
what hope do fans and coaches have?
If I could influence it, I'd make referee courses mandatory for
all pundits. That might help at least rid us of some to the
disinformation!
