Much deserved praise by Dermott Gallagher on Ref Watch for
Stuart Attwell for his calmness and the way he judged the
temperature of the game and dealt with players. They showed the
2 incidents involving Keita, debating a possible RC. Quite
rightly in my view, Dermott, while opining it was not a RC,
acknowledged a YC could have been given for one of the
challenges. Both players' foot was high but only Keita's caught
       his opponent.

However Keita caught the player around the groin area (which
wasn't where the ball was - pardon the pun). How was that not
dangerous play? How was it any different from the Brentford
player who got sent off at the weekend?

It could be argued that he still played the ball, just not the
       right one!
I'll take myself to the naughty step!

Do you think it was prudent not to book Kepa during the shootout
for his antics do you think? (as it would have left him with
nowhere to go if he continued)
I just think he was really taking the p*ss and should perhaps of
been booked to stop him doing it.

In the Sheffield Wednesday v Blackburn game there was an
incident where two players went for a bouncing ball with their
foot up at around the same height. Ball within playing
distance, both had a 50:50 chance of gaining possession. In
effect both players doing the same thing. One player gets hurt
and so the other player gets the card. It looked stupid. The
players were perplexed - if it was dangerous play both players
should have received a yellow card. If we are not careful
referees will award cards based on the outcome and not the
       intent of both parties.
The Keita incident was for me a footballing incident and Atwell
who appears to have great confidence at present given his past
issues probably saw it as that - 2 players doing the same thing
at the same time. Both players worthy of yellow cards - or both
worthy of no further action. And Atwell commendably imho chose
       the latter.

My wife, who has little interest in football and less knowledge
about it, watched the shootout. She asked whether the referee
was only allowed to ask Kepa to stop doing what he was doing
each time. She was perplexed that there was no other sanction
available. She was even more perplexed when I told her that
there was but that the referee was choosing not to employ it. I
was delighted when Kelleher, who appeared to behave impeccably
during the shootout, came out on top.

I think that he should have been cautioned too. Certainly, he
would have been if I'd been the Referee. Persistent antics. I
was pleased that he was the player to miss his penalty with a
kick that wouldn't have been out of place in a game of Rugby! I
must admit to thinking "Ha ha, serves you right." Karma
       prevailed. [emoji1]

Attwell had a tricky start to life in the PL. I'm sure it would
have finished many off, even more so with the demotion in 2012.
But he kept going, has clearly learnt a lot, and developed a lot
in maturity and control. He has now established himself as one
of the more reliable members of SG1 and it was nice to hear him
receiving a lot of praise on Sunday from Sky. Well done to him.
On the wider point of penalties, the taker in a shootout has to
walk a lot further than the goalkeepers (unless the keeper's
about to take one of course!) It surely can't be too difficult
to introduce a process where the referee places the ball on the
spot before they get there and the goalkeeper needs to already
be on their line. If the keeper's not on their line, I'd suggest
the taker should be free to take it anyway once they get there.

Yep! United. Brain fade which I have been suffering from for
       years.... Cannot blame spellchecker.
