Michael Naylor - I miss seeing him about. Such a promising young
referee & a lovely guy.

A mixed bag may be, but I would say 7 of the 19 play off final
referees going onto SG1 is actually a very good percentage.
When you think about how many L1 referees there are, then having
to get through SG2, and the undoubted bottleneck there is at SG1
(evidenced by the fact that four of the first 6 in that list are
SG1 now, and the other two are SG2, there isn't a lot of room
for movement).

Who was Gary Sutton? Have no recollection of him at all
Marriner had the quickest rise it would seem. Wasn’t he a PL ref
within 2 years?

Yes, but remember SG2 didn't exist then so he had one less step.

Looking on stat sites his last game was September 2015. Strange
time after just 7 games so maybe injury related? Seemed to
mostly do L1 & L2 games with 3/4 championship games/season. Was
on the FL 04/05-05/06. 07/08, 08/09 was back in the conference
and then 09/10-2014/15 was on the FL with just the 7 games in
15/16. He refereed a couple of games I know I was at at Dean
Court but even looking at photos of him he's not familiar.

I think he was one of those who appeared on the EFL list for a
season or two after he refereed his last game, a bit like
Shoebridge (I think that was the name?), so yes, probably injury
related rather than resignation or demotion, as with the likes
of Malone, Graham and Collins.

He had 2 spells on the FL with a 2 season break in between them,
that I would assume was a demotion as he was refereeing in the
conference during those 2 seasons, so not injury related. He
then did 7 years on the FL plus the 7 games in the 8th season,
that I assume was then injury related because he appeared to do
no more games at all after them.

Sutton was a Lincolnshire referee, who joined the league list in
2005, did a couple of seasons and then returned to the
Conference (or whatever it was called then), before returning to
the league list in 2009, having refereed the Conference play-off
final earlier that summer.
His final game was Notts County v Crawley in September 2015.
