Referee's Hall of Fame
By: mutn3 Date: February 13, 2022, 12:49 pm

Hi all,
Musing my way through a Sunday afternoon, I found my way to some
Italian website, where I note that they do include referees in a
national footy Hall Of Fame. The recent names of Collina,
Rosetti and Rizolli were there, and doubtless Lo Bello from way
back when.
If you had just ten names to include for an English one ( we can
do UK wide another time) who would you nominate, and why?
I suspect Upton's might be busy here!

George Courtney - one of the best, most natural referees I have
seen
Howard Webb - lovely guy, great referee and modern day WC final
referee

Jack Taylor would have to be in with a shout as a brilliant
man-manager. And if we can stretch English to mean FL, Clive
Thomas was an incredible character.

Francis Marindin perhaps? Later to be a HM Inspector of
Railways.
9 F. A. Cup Finals, including eight in a row.

Yes, definitely the Major.
I think Stanley, later Sir Stanley Rous, founder of the diagonal
system of refereeing and later FIFA president, should be
included.
JT - it was always thought that Ken Dagnall rather than Jim
Finney would have refereed the 1966 World Cup Final if England
hadn't been participating, hence Ken's appointment to the
3rd/4th place play off final.

Just a thought Most of the referees mentioned did not have to
endure scores of cameras monitoring their every decision with
endless replays or players surrounding them at nearly every
major decision. I wonder if they would have showed up as quite
so infallible in today's climate
