Genuinely interested to know why that’s the case. As with 12
yellows and a red something must’ve gone wrong.

Actually there's another word I could put in front of that but
obviously I'd be sent to the stands for a very long time.
If you were looking solely at the stats you'd be forgiven for
thinking it was a rerun of the infamous Chelsea v Leeds FA Cup
final from the seventies but it was far from it.
The referee just seemed to lose the plot and once he started
whipping the card out for fairly innocuous incidents he just
       left himself nowhere to go.
With regard to the question about what went wrong the answer is
       simple. He turned up.

I've not seen the action, but would presume that with 12 yellows
and a red the thing that has gone wrong is player behaviour!!!

T’was actually thirteen yellows and a red.
I believe this official is outcarding the likes of Breakspear
and Kettle which is quite some achievement!

Or maybe a certain amount of player frustration. Maybe the
referee's other half said they want plenty of cards and he
hasn't realised it's Valentines Day on Monday.

From the brief highlights, he seemed to get all three penalty
       calls wrong.

Hearsay, because I wasn't at Wimbledon but an old friend who is
largely sympathetic to referees and isn't given to hyperbole
was. His verdict on Mather's performance " one of the very
worst I have seen in over sixty years of watching professional
football. Utterly, utterly clueless. He lost the confidence and
respect of the players early on and it all turned fairly
anarchic. Honestly, he made Topsy Turvey look like Jack Taylor "
Mather must have impressed somebody at a lower level to find
himself on the Football League so I hope if this report is true,
and I do not doubt it is, this was merely an aberration and he
can find some good form quickly.

I recall his "mishandling" of last season's National League
Play-off Final at Ashton Gate when Torquay were on the wrong end
of some poor decisions allowing Hartlepool to progress back into
       the League.

Just looking at his match stats for the season and in 15 games
he has dished out 80 yellows and 8 reds at an average of 5.87
which is by far the highest of any of the FL refs. Only 3 of
those games did he show fewer than 3 cards in a game.
Has he been given 15 challenging games that have resulted in
lots of cards or is his style to dish out cards like confetti to
       maintain control?
