Everyone on here saying it was a poor decision and VAR shouldn’t
have got involved, but why did friend not stick with his
original decision at the monitor? Is it so hard for a ref to say
to Var no I disagree and I’m staying with my decision?

I agree with you, and as I mentioned earlier, my impression was
that Friend wasn't too convinced when he looked at the monitor
for so long. But surely it was a bigger mistake by VAR Pawson
to consider the original decision a clear and obvious error.
Whether we like it or not, it seems that when referees are sent
to the monitor, they are under a great amount of pressure to
change their mind. A real shame for the game that Friend didn't
stick his head above the parapet today whatever Riley and Co's
       reaction.

A very poor decision from VAR… That’s never a penalty

I used to think Pawson was one of better PL VARs but he seems to
       have had some controversies recently.
Pawson was VAR for Newcastle V Man City just before Christmas
where most people thought he missed a clear penalty for
challenge by Ederson so I wonder if he has over-compensated
here. That seems to happen quite a lot, with VARs sometimes
going from one extreme to another very quickly.
I heard some suggestions the second Liverpool goal could have
       been offside. Any thoughts?

Personally didnt think it was a penalty, natural coming
together, both players had momentum and neither could
Get out of the path of the other. The ball was long gone, way
out of playing distance, not that that matters if a foul had
       been committed.
How on earth it can take so long to recommend a review if was
clear and obvious is beyond me.
Admittedly they did look to see if jota was onside but that
       didnt take long.
Friend should have stuck with his original decision imo, i think
pawson has let him down badly too, i am sure
If Friend was var And Pawson ref he wouldnt have been chuffed
       going to the screen.
I tend to think Pawson and Kavanagh tend to get too involved in
re refereeing the game when on var duties.

Let’s call this one exactly as it is; completely and utterly
embarrassing. I like Pawson, a very safe, steady pair of hands,
but on this occasion he has had a mare. I genuinely can’t get my
head around a ref of his calibre looking at that and thinking
       it’s a pen. It’s extremely worrying. It didn’t look a pen a full
speed, and it looks even less of a pen when slowed down and
viewed a hundred times! How he can come to that conclusion is
beyond baffling. It’s been stated lots already on this thread
but Jota kicks the ball off the pitch and then makes a marked
swerve to collide with the keeper. Without any doubt the worst
VAR intervention I’ve ever witnessed. Pathetic I’m afraid.

Kevin and the team were abused coming out of the stadium to
their car after the game and this is completely unacceptable.
The fans should have been nowhere near the car, this could have
been a lot worse and they shouldn’t be put in that position:

On the penalty decision, I don’t think there should have been an
intervention, *far from it*, but the comments on each post seem
to get more and more personal each week. Pawson was VAR before
Christmas where a goalkeeper impacted the striker in similar
circumstances and everybody screamed penalty and this may have
played an impact in the decision making, I don’t know. I do know
they’ve not gone out to cause controversy and as officials
(supposedly) we should have some more understand and empathy
with how those decisions are reached. I would agree, KF didn’t
look convinced with the decision but it’s very difficult with
this type of call when he’s sent to the screen IMO.

Referees get plenty of understanding and sympathy on this forum
, however you cannot expect fans pay a lot of money to watch and
support their team and who will feel incensed by the penalty
decision show empathy or understanding towards the referee when
he has made such a ridiculous decision nor can you expect
members on this forum to defend the indefensible that said I
don’t condone fans screaming abuse at the officials on their way
       to their car either

"but the comments on each post seem to get more and more
       personal each week"
I don't think this is true of the vast majority of posters. The
referee and VAR have come in for strong criticism over the
penalty as it's very difficult to understand how the initial
decision was deemed by VAR to be a clear and obvious error,
       endorsed subsequently by the referee.
It would be a sad day if opinions expressed firmly, but not
abusive, of a very poor decision were to be interpreted as
       'personal'
