The distance might be debated but in my view there is no
contention that Peyper is behind Owens' standing and with clear
daylight between them.

In my view a distance which can be measured in light years too!

Peyper gets a hard time on here unjustly so IMO - as I said
previously, I can't recall what he has really done that has been
the controversial or caused huge debate in rugby circles (unless
I am mistaken). His style might not be for everyone, and I'd say
again that he's hugely respected from those in the game.
My other point is that Nigel was pretty much way ahead of
everyone for many years.

You're right, for me it is his style as I am not qualified to
give a comprehensive judgement on each refereeing decision. I
think Peyper comes across as a "bustling" referee who doesn't
always seem to be in sympathy with the match he is refereeing.
However if he is "hugely respected" by those whom he referees
then that does say a lot I will concede.
Owens is a very fine referee, certainly one of the best in the
world, who perhaps got a little too fond of the stardust for my
taste and towards the end was maybe trying just a little too
hard to become a 'legend'.

Yeah I can see why his style isn't for everyone!
I actually agree, I think towards the end (perhaps not at the
WC) but prior to that I think that as he knew he was retiring,
his decision making wasn't perhaps as sharp (which I get) hence
the decision to step away. Oh and he did enjoy the spotlight
hahah!!

Credit where credit is due I thought Peyper was good today. Was
not the most challenging of games, not convinced Wales got off
the bus.
Jaco was firm, fair, consistent, kept out the way, good
cooperation with ARs and TMO.
The 2nd game was tense, without being spectacular. Not sure what
to make of O'Keefe - lots of bitty decisions, scrum troubles,
management of line outs seemed unusually desperate.
Thought the big decision was correct in the penalty try and
yellow for LCD.
Did not fill me with the confidence I have had in him
previously.
Fair play to Scotland though.

Well 1st two games done completed and tbh I thought Peyper was
pretty good to set the scene and had no issues.
Ben O Keefe was excellent in the Calcutta cup game IMO, he is
without a doubt establishing himself as one of the go-to men for
WR and right up there. He is at the top of his game right now
which is great to see.

I missed the Ireland v Wales game but a friend did and said he
felt it was Peyper’s best performance for some time.
Like Peyper I am not 100% convinced by O’Keefe most of the time
but can’t quite put my finger on why. I felt for most of the
game he was ok and Agee that Cowan Dickies moment of madness got
what it deserved. The last set of scrums worry me; I can’t claim
to really understand most of rugby’s laws but the suggestions
from Brian Moore and the other commentators was that Scotland
were lucky not to concede a penalty at the death from the
disrupted scrum; as Moore said 9 times out of 10 in the middle
of a match a pen would have been given. The implication was that
O’Keefe may have bottled it. Any thoughts RCG?
Can I just add 2 things - firstly it was good to have Nigel
Owens views from the commentary box and secondly how Brian Moore
is going to be missed. Ridiculous decision to drop him

Out of interest do you have any views on the feeling in a lot of
quarters that O’Keefe bottled giving England a penalty for
repeated scrum offences at the end? Whistleblower has started a
thread on the non footy forum which you might like to view too
if you haven’t seen it yet.

Owens' contribution only highlighted the number of some would
say "questionable" decisions, UEFA call them "supportable"
😆
O'Keefe was so intent on not defining the match with a penalty,
that he almost defined it by not giving the penalty!
I felt he was having to try and keep players on his side, rather
than just explaining what had happened.
Covid has "robbed" us of Paul Williams in particular, who I
think is close to being NZ #1
