It's a tough call between Oliver & Taylor. Both are very good
refs & it depends who is in charge & who they prefer. Both
deserve to go, but I don't think they will as it'll be one ref
per country. I think all the major UEFA nations will have one
ref & there will be some politics involved: Here's my list:
Taylor
Siebert
Orsato
Turpin
Del Cerro Grande
Makkelie
Karasev
Vincic
Soares Dias
Hategan

I'm sure we all hope that peace will have been restored by then
but I suspect he will fall under the same sanctions as the
team/gymnasts/athletes etc.
Without trivialising the atrocities currently ongoing in
Ukraine, it's a shame for him as he has been in amazing form.
He's coming up 43 so probably his last shot at a WC. I wonder if
he will chose to retire early?

I was going to suggest Cakir might have a better chance if
Karasyov didn't go (Cakir just missed out on my initial guess)
but now it looks like both might be unlikely. I'd guess Soares
Dias might be next in line, although I'm not fully convinced by
him.
I know we said it wouldn't happen, and I still think it's very
unlikely, but I wonder if there's any chance of a UEFA country
like England having two referees go? Normally I wouldn't really
advocate such an approach as I think generally there's been
plenty of depth across UEFA and the concept of a 'world' cup
should be respected. But I think the UEFA list could be starting
to lack a bit of depth if Cakir and Karasyov weren't selected
and at least 10 are chosen. There's a few names on the list who
really lack experience or who have never really had even
knockout stage CL appointments. I feel Taylor and Oliver would
both quite comfortably be in the top 10 best referees in Europe
if the list does get cut down by a few.
It doesn't sound like Lahoz especially covered himself in glory
last night, although none of the Spanish referees really seem to
be doing that. When was the last time a Spanish referee really
excelled at a major tournament? I don't think a Spanish ref has
had a knockout stage game at last World Cup or Euros, and I
remember the opening game at Euro 2012 and Germany V Serbia in
2010.
Have FIFA published any details of which referees are on their
shortlist from outside UEFA?

It was reported that, had England not made the final of the
Euros Anthony and his team would have been appointed.
After the QFs four teams of officials were retained, AT's being
one of them

Thats why i see Taylor doing the next UCL final with no English
teams involved

If a couple more of the presumed top 10 could just drop out for
whatever reasons, I'd not complain. The shorter the list, the
more chance my boy will be going... [emoji9]

I do agree. From a Scottish perspective (if that at all
matters), both Taylor and Oliver regularly impress. VAR
vagaries in England aside (that seem to be skewering everyone),
they always seem to be both a safe pair of hands, and lacking in
the overtures that make some other officials more marmite.

I've found a list of the South America referees who attended a
FIFA seminar in February -

I think the Argentine ref at the top of the list went to Euros
but am not too familiar with any other names - could any RTR
members have a guess at some names likely to go to WC?
