Hard to disagree with any of bmb's picks. If only one English
referee goes then I think it will be Taylor though I am of the
firm and unwavering opinion that it should be Oliver. I think
there is clear blue water now between Oliver and Taylor in
Oliver's favour but I don't think the nabobs of international
refereeing share my undoubtedly correct view.

FIFA does the final selection. But it's not a secret that every
Confederation has a say on the selection process.

Thanks edy, would it be fair to say that it seems that
FIFA/Collina favour Oliver over Taylor? Or maybe not enough
information to tell. I wonder if UEFA have a lot of influence if
Cakir could lose out over Vinic.

My recollection of the Euros was that Taylor & Oliver both had 2
Group stage games and Taylor had a round of 16 game, Oliver had
a QF.
Taylor rightly won praise for his quick and calm handling of the
serious Eriksen incident. Both in my view had 2 very good
performances and 1 that was ok in their 3 matches.
At one time, although I felt, and still do, that Oliver is a
more natural referee, I could understand why in some European
circles Taylor might be regarded as a safer pair of hands and
that just maybe Oliver was slightly more prone to a KMI error.
I no longer consider that distinction is valid. However, this
could well be Taylor's only chance of a World Cup, whereas
Oliver could still be available for two more after Qatar
assuming he continues to ply his trade.
Aside from those comments, I think edy's choice could well be
spot on.

It’s none of our opinions that matter, it’s only Collina and
Rossetti’s opinions that matter at the end of the day. I’d
certainly not presume to know more than either of them!!

Neither would I presume. However that does not obviate the sense
that objective knowledge is not the sole criterion in these
appointments. Just as we do on RTR, Collina and Rossetti ( in
passing I merely wonder at the wisdom of having both such
titanic referee management posts held by fellow countrymen but I
hear the argument ' if they are the best for the job ' even if I
am not entirely convinced by it ) will have their own personal
preferences which will be based on style and " mirror image ".
So and so reminds me of how I used to do things so I will favour
them, all probably unconsciously.
You see this in many professions and it only becomes pernicious
when the one bestowing patronage starts overlooking the errors
of their protege. Not that I am suggesting this happens in
senior refereeing appointments though others, more informed than
I, have suggested that it does on occasions at all levels.

I agree that our opinions do not count, but it is fun to
speculate. Here are my 10
Oliver
Taylor
Turpin
Siebert
Orsato
Makkelie
Hategin
Mateu Lahoz
Cakir
Kaseryov.
Del Cerro Grande and Vinci are my two reserves.
I think 10 referees from UEFA is not enough and i would expect
more when FIFA pick them.

Marciniak
I think Cakir will just miss out. I think Spain's representative
is hardest to predict. Unlike many it seems, I've always thought
Oliver was the favourite for WC although obviously perfectly
possible Taylor goes instead. I think it's very unlikely any
UEFA country would have two referees, although interesting to
think how it will work come 2026 and the expanded format.
