Great stuff bmb, genuinely fascinating to hear about your first
hand experiences with refs. And definitely a lesson learned for
yours truly! I do tend to make my mind up about certain refs
personalities off the pitch by their persona on it. Stroud for
example, I’d decided was a walking ego! Very happy to be proved
wrong though.

I'm afraid I have no interest in referees' personalities and
egos off the pitch, no more than they would have in mine.
They stand or fall, in my estimation, purely on their
performances on the pitch - and there seems to be a fair bit of
stumbling at the moment.
Hoping for something decent from Sam Barrott tonight on his
first visit to Portman Road - indeed his first Ipswich match.
Indeed it will take little to surpass Alan Young's effort in the
corresponding fixture a couple of years ago. It will be the
biggest crowd of his career I guess with his two Sunderland
matches watched by a combined total of zero people.

Agreed. Booking was sufficient.
The one who was sent off for 2nd yellow was nailed on.. he had
the Bournemouth player by the neck quite aggressively, having
been booked for a cynical foul earlier. Rangers fans up in arms
but really they can have no complaints about that one.

Both clubs have been charged with a breach of Rule E20.1 –
failure “to ensure that their players conducted themselves in an
orderly fashion.”
The full statement from the FA reads: “It is alleged that both
clubs failed to ensure their players conducted themselves in an
orderly fashion and/or refrained from provocative behaviour
during the 95th minute of the fixture.
“Both clubs have until Tuesday 4 January 2022 to provide
respective responses.”

Probably another £10,000 fine to act as a deterrent!

Bournemouth seem to be frequenting the FA headmasters office too
regularly these days.
You’d have thought they’d learnt their lesson after the ugly
mass brawl v Watford last season. 🙄

We got £15,000 last time - Millwall only got £5,000 - same
incident! Lack of parity at play. Might be as high as £25,000
this time!

If not that lesson then at least from the mass surrounding the
ref in November. [emoji52]
I was 3 weeks old when I went to my 1st game, grew up supporting
them and part of me always will but my heart has gone out of it
since PL football happened. They're not my club anymore, I mean
in the sense of the friendly, inoffensive family club I spent
many years following. They are a soulless business now off the
pitch and frequent participants in the dark arts on it. I hate
it. Sigh - only 31 days until the NBI is back - need to check
the return dates for the Romanian/Slovak/Serbian leagues,
hopefully one of them will be a week or 2 earlier. Latvia is
not back to March I think it is, although Nebojša will have me
working from about 6 weeks before the league is back!

Such a shame, and actually very sad that you now feel that way
about a club you once loved, bmb. But I fully empathise and
understand. I think many of us who were madly in love with our
clubs and football in general are heading down that same road. I
very rarely watch any PL games now, in fact just last night I
chose to watch the darts rather that the PL games on offer. The
PL itself is rotten, Sky treat their viewers like idiots, the
cheating players would sell their own granny to get a decision,
there’s just so much wrong with modern day football. Money mad
maniacs running the game these days sadly, and as bmb said, that
connection that many of us used to feel to our clubs is long
gone. A real shame.

I worked there for over 15 years in one capacity or another and
can say in all honesty there were only a couple who I would
groan at seeing their name on the appointments in terms of
having to deal with them as staff. I won't name names, they have
no chance to reply & mine is just one perception of dealing with
them. They of course may well have thought exactly the same
about me! bmb jr was only 7/8 when he started bugging them all
with questions on the LOTG and all bar 1 happily gave him the
time of day. They'd discuss decisions with him, many would set
him theoretical tasks for when they next came and then question
him on what he learned - they all remembered so it wasn't just a
case of fobbing him off. The fact he used to turn up to games
happily wearing a red referee shirt Linny gave him, over the top
of his Richard Hughes or Stevie Lovell AFCB shirt would see lots
of big smiles his way. Winter it would be hidden away under one
of Jason Tindall's jackets but he'd still make sure they knew
he was team ref! Whether me being a retired referee and mother
to a budding referee made a difference to how they were with me
I don't know but no-one, staff wise, seemed to complain about
them. A few their on pitch persona was miles away from their off
field selves. All were acquaintances, some I went on to be
friends with, some I still keep in touch with despite never
seeing them at games anymore. The one thing I will say is never
judge a referee's personality by their onfield persona. I've
seen 3, who I am good friends with, described on here as being
arrogant and none of them are anywhere near being so. All 3 are
very shy & reserved off pitch so I wonder if that has something
to do with how they portray themselves on the pitch?

Many thanks bmb for the insight and detail. My experience with
referees in the GAA would generally mirror yours. In fact, the
only really common personality trait that I have noticed across
most referees is that they are usually quite generous with their
time and willing to talk/give advice etc. I have also seen the
side Mark Clattenburg speaks about in his book i.e.
manipulation, political games etc on an individual level though
I would find very few officials unpleasant to deal with.
