Keith Stroud - QPR v Bournemouth
DIR By: Craven
Date: December 28, 2021, 8:50 am
---------------------------------------------------------
Disclaimer before I start - I have always thought Stroud is a
dreadful referee!
I watched this game with interest as I’m friendly with a fair
few QPR fans, and they, and their fan base in general were up in
arms about Stroud being in the middle for this one. There’s a
long standing animosity from their fan base towards Stroud as
they perceive him to have an agenda against them. Apparently if
you ask any QPR fan who enemy number one is amongst the
refereeing fraternity then 100% would name Stroud (my mates
words). What was also brought up was Stroud’s record in
Bournemouth fixtures (W11, D1, L0)
As a neutral all this was good dust 🤣 It’s so nice to
just sit back and revel in the suffering of other fans
(especially when they’re friends and the club in question is
your local rivals 😆)
So beer in hand, I watched to see what all the paranoia was
about. Have to be honest, I thought Stroud was utterly
atrocious. As usual with him, every slight bit of contact was a
foul. The Bournemouth goal was contentious - a free kick
dubiously awarded out wide. Can see why he thought it was
possibly a foul to be fair. What it certainly wasn’t was a
yellow card which duly followed. Bournemouth scored from the
free kick.
Second half followed a similar theme, players throwing
themselves to the deck and Stroud buying it every time. There
was a penalty shout for QPR which I thought he got right to be
honest, Bournemouth lad just stood his ground.
Bournemouth seem to have taken gamesmanship to new levels this
season, Jefferson Lerma and Ben Pearson both embarrassing
themselves as usual. Horrible, spiteful players the pair of
them. This culminated in a mass melee in injury time after
Stroud had failed to clamp down on their shenanigans and
seemingly both sets of players had lost all respect for him.
Lots of yellows and a red for Dozzell. Players clearly to blame
for their behaviour, but Stroud made a complete mess of things
and I genuinely think this wouldn’t have happened with a more
competent official in the middle
Going back to the player respect issue. It’s very hard to see as
you can’t know what is being said out there, but they just
seemed totally irritated by Stroud from the first whistle. He
certainly doesn’t help when he comes scuttling over at a million
MPH with his standard calm down hand gestures and his scrunched
up face. It’d irritate me as a player I know that!
Be interesting to hear bmb’s take on Stroud? By the sounds of it
bmb you get to know the refs and Stroud is a regular visitor to
Bournemouth. I’ve clearly made my mind up on him, but willing to
be persuaded different by someone in the know.

I agree that Stroud comes over on the pitch as a fussy and
somewhat irritatingly officious official who doesn't seem to
command the game he is refereeing. That said, I have seen him
referee twice and he was perfectly OK both times though I do
seem to recall a fair bit of whistle and quite an authoritarian
style. I was very surprised when he was elevated into the
Premier League for a while and not in the least surprised when
he was demoted out of it.
Off the pitch I believe he is not in the least bit fussy or
officious but quite mellow and good company. I am quite certain
he treats all clubs equally whatever perceptions they might
have.

The appointment was met with same level of joy(!) from the AFCB
fans. He's no more popular with Bournemouth than QPR. I get the
record, so in those terms he's good for us and when I pointed it
out to AFCB fans in the days leading up to the game they were
genuinely surprised. It's actually 12 wins - the 1 sometimes
classed as a draw, was a cup game we won 11-10 on pens. Number
of games won though has to be taken in context, e.g. he was
referee for one of AFCB expected wins v Yeovil, that's not meant
disrespectfully but taking into account the stats - Yeovil have
only ever won 3 games/17 v AFCB. 3 games came in the
Championship in the back to back promotion season with 26 AFCB
wins in 46 games. 6 of the games have been this season and last
season, including the cup draw/win. If you only referee a team
in games that they are, on paper expected to win, then you will
have a good record win wise with that team.

I don't watch enough games to know if it's standard but Lerma
was a complete embarrassment at times. That 300 rolls incident
when I'm pretty sure there was no contact was absolutely
disgraceful. Pearson was no better. Lerma though is a cult hero
at AFCB so too many overlook his behaviour and instead blame a
vendetta against him by referees. Absolute BS - he gets the
bookings/sendings off/bans because of his disgusting behaviour
no more no less.
I have to disagree on the start of the melee - a QPR player
picked up Solanke by his shirt - that was appalling and
dangerous. Even if they were frustrated by the non good enough
(imo) officiating you don't do that to a player prone on the
ground. That is what kicked it all off and every player
involved from both teams need to take a long hard look in the
mirror and reflect on their bad behaviour. That's on them -
no-one else.
Before you try and say oh denial - I genuinely don't watch
enough games. If there are Hungarian/Romanian/Serbian/Slovak
games on I watch them ahead of English games. I follow the NBI
as my 1st choice - don't miss a single game in that league & if
there is no NBI I then go for Romanian/Serbian/Slovak games
next. I only watch English football during the winter break!!
Yesterday was the 2nd AFCB game I have watched this season - the
defeat away at Middlesbrough being the other one. Excellent
performance from Chris Kavanagh as ref that game, as an aside.

There was zero respect from ether set of players - that speaks
volumes.

I worked at AFCB until 2012 so got to know a lot of referees
during the too many years of working there prior to that date.
During that time he refereed us 3 times, I'd say 1 acceptable
performance and 2 that were completely random. He was pleasant
enough to deal with as staff but then the vast majority are. I
don't really know him. I dealt with him more when he lived more
locally and used to do all of the pitch inspections for us when
the weather was bad. He was always very helpful, would come
straight out to do one and was pleasant when he did so. We'd sit
and have a cuppa & natter if there was going to be another
inspection needed. Some of the lads I know went to school with
him and speak highly of him as a person. If being a lovely
person was criteria for being an excellent referee then he'd be
right up there!

A brilliant and extremely thorough reply bmb, very much
appreciated 👍🏼
Very interesting to hear that Bournemouth fans feel the same
about Stroud. Just shows how hard to please and fickle we can
all be
And I agree with you about the incident that started the melee.
Ridiculous behaviour from the QPR fella to attempt to drag
someone from the floor. The players need to take a good hard
look at themselves 👍🏼 I just felt Stroud had
lost complete control by then and something stupid was always
going to happen
But again, thanks for all the info bmb, very very interesting
and informative. And good to hear that Stroud is a decent chap
off the pitch

Great thread this thank you all for the detailed analysis and
comments.
bmb, without commenting specifically of course, would you
generally find most top referees you’ve encountered pleasant to
deal with? Often people comment that there is a certain
‘personality type’ attracted to refereeing. I’m not convinced
but would be interested in your experience.

That "personality type" appears to be dominant in the management
of referees, from PGMOL downwards. "Do as I say", "Don't argue"
etc, there's no room for individuals whose man-management will
be streets ahead of those who are in positions of influence, and
who have far greater empathy/sympathy for players. Their
(management's) desire for consistency overrides everything else.
You'll be viewed with utmost suspicion if you aren't issuing YCs
and RCs sufficiently frequently.

Respectfully I disagree about the penalty shout. IMO it's a
clear penalty. There is a contact above the knee which causes
the attacker's fall.
Having watched the 2nd half, Stroud's performance was below
average.

Should the qpr player who started the melee by trying to drag
the bournemouth up from the floor in an aggressive manner have
been red carded ?

I worked there for over 15 years in one capacity or another and
can say in all honesty there were only a couple who I would
groan at seeing their name on the appointments in terms of
having to deal with them as staff. I won't name names, they have
no chance to reply & mine is just one perception of dealing with
them. They of course may well have thought exactly the same
about me! bmb jr was only 7/8 when he started bugging them all
with questions on the LOTG and all bar 1 happily gave him the
time of day. They'd discuss decisions with him, many would set
him theoretical tasks for when they next came and then question
him on what he learned - they all remembered so it wasn't just a
case of fobbing him off. The fact he used to turn up to games
happily wearing a red referee shirt Linny gave him, over the top
of his Richard Hughes or Stevie Lovell AFCB shirt would see lots
of big smiles his way. Winter it would be hidden away under one
of Jason Tindall's jackets but he'd still make sure they knew
he was team ref! Whether me being a retired referee and mother
to a budding referee made a difference to how they were with me
I don't know but no-one, staff wise, seemed to complain about
them. A few their on pitch persona was miles away from their off
field selves. All were acquaintances, some I went on to be
friends with, some I still keep in touch with despite never
seeing them at games anymore. The one thing I will say is never
judge a referee's personality by their onfield persona. I've
seen 3, who I am good friends with, described on here as being
arrogant and none of them are anywhere near being so. All 3 are
very shy & reserved off pitch so I wonder if that has something
to do with how they portray themselves on the pitch?

In the context of the game I don't think so. I do hope though he
was one of the several booked afterwards.
