John Martin was probably the best referee I had the pleasure of
running the line to back in the early 80s, also on the Isthmian
League

Was 4th official to Ian back in early 80s in an evening game at
Newport County at the old Somerton Park in the early days before
4O became what they are today, what a Gentleman!! Also did a 4O
with Roger Milford, chalk and cheese!!

I’m surprised nobody has mentioned Paul rejer ( hope I spelt
that right) always excellent when I saw him , very
uncontroversial but never seemed to get top games .

Great sense of humour as well. He always used to do the Hamorthy
v AFCB pre season friendly at Hamworthy rec. Back in the days
when AFCB were a rubbish little club who no-one had heard of! It
was the highlight of the season, always the first pre-season
friendly, huge attendance as we all caught up after the summer
break, fantastic BBQ always laid on by the social committee at
Hamworthy and everyone just laying about on the bank by the
pitch with a burger and bottle of beer (or cider) taking no
notice of what was happening on the pitch! He always, always
booked Marcus Browning (book me Browning - the origins of the
nickname bmb, though quite why I ended up with it not Marcus is
one of the unexplained mysteries in life!) One year he pretended
to book Marcus while standing talking to me & him outside the
dressing room ahead of kick off & it became a bit of a standing
joke over the next couple of seasons with them playing cat &
mouse as they headed in from the car park on arrival so Dermot
could issue the "might as well get it out of the way now" YC -
hilarious to watch.

I worked with Dermot once and whilst he was very friendly he was
extremely focused. The rest of us were chatting in the changing
room but he was just sat pretty much silent, and in fairness he
did explain to us that was how he approached games. He was
extremely well liked by players though, they all wanted to talk
to him and I can remember Keith Andrews coming into the changing
room for a chat.
As an observer he couldn't have been any different, really
chatty before the game. And if you got him in a double act with
Paul Taylor you would spend the time from arriving at the ground
in hysterics as they relayed tales of what used to happen in
their days. Really nice guy all round.

Some great names from the past - Vic Callow was always excellent
when I saw him, very definitely a no-nonsense referee. I was
also very pleased to see references to Paul Rejer and Ian Hemley
in particular, and the only name with which I might disagree is
Mick Fletcher, who had absolute stinkers whenever I saw him.
However, I am surprised that nobody has mentioned Alan Robinson,
Tony Glasson or David Axcell - all of whom were consistently
first rate.

Agree with you on Tony Glasson who was a regular at Selhurst
Park over 10 seasons. A joke-penalty award apart (Palace v
Wrexham), he was consistently good. Mike James from Horsham was
another who was 'under the radar'. 12 seasons on the list but I
think I only saw him once on TV (when he sent off a W Ham player
for foul language towards line Ray Biggar), and I'm sure I never
saw him at SP, despite him coming from over the border in
Sussex.

Entirely agree with this assessment. I lined to him on a couple
of occasions and found him indeed to be calm and assured. He
seemed to make a good impression quite quickly when he reached
the National List and I expected him to go to the top but
although he had twelve good years on the List he never did hit
the heights which his earlier potential had suggested. Don't
really know why that was.
