I liked Roger Dilkes , very quiet laidback ref who went about
his business with the minimum of fuss , others that stick in my
mind in that regard are , Keith Burge , Steve Dunn , Peter Jones
then you have the controversial ones like Paul Danson, Mike
Reed . Love him or hate the best when it came to managing the
players and big games has to be Graham Poll for me

And if I may have another go, Tony Ward. Saw him many times
over the years and a steady and good referee. He now helps out
with official hospitality on matchdays at the Emirates Stadium
and a more pleasant and courteous individual would be hard to
find.

I saw Neale Barry at Old Trafford a few times. He came across
as quite laid back, not very demonstrative or a commanding
figure, and I came away from games not especially impressed but
not moaning about him either. Isn't he an Assessor or Observer
or whatever they call them these days?
Barry was from Scunthorpe, and another referee from way out east
I recall from a couple of decades earlier was John Thacker from
Scarborough. Again, not someone who made a big impression, good
or bad. Of course, we also saw Ray Tinkler from Boston who
became rather more famous.

He was rather more important than that; head of refereeing at
the FA, if I remember his title correctly, before retiring a
couple of years ago. He didn't come across as laid back in
meetings with referees. Let's just say he wasn't frightened to
let you know where he stood on matters under discussion.

Another who was laid back was Ian Hemley, I worked with him a
few times, very quietly spoken off the field, but well respected
by the players in my opinion

If we're looking back, John Martin and Dennis Hedges come to
mind. I always enjoyed lining to them in our Isthmian League
days and they were always ready to give good advice to us
youngsters. John Homewood and Tony Oliver were two others. I was
out with them after they came off the League list, but no hissy
fits or airs and graces about them, and every match was treated
as though it was the FA Cup Final.

Always liked Hemley as an assessor, he liked the way I
refereed😊

You're right of course, and I wasn't trying to diminish his
importance!. But he's also a UEFA Observer I believe. I'm sure
I've seen his name, as well as those of Elleray, Riley and
(Peter) Jones in that role.
