Please excuse my ignorance but how, between them, have Messrs
Marriner and Oliver not judged the Xaka challenge a Red Card?

The directive is that a tackle from foot/studs is a caution on
the boot area, and a red card on the ankle. I’d say it’s fairly
clearly on the boot area, and the force isn’t sufficient alone
to take it into red card territory.
This will be a clip used by the FA in training next season, and
I’d be prepared to bet that it will be a caution.
The reason VAR hasn’t had an input is because they don’t get
involved for cautions. It’s a missed YC from the referee and
presumably a loss of 0.1 from their observation mark.

Thanks but even given that I would contend that the perceived
intent and, more pertinently, the force of the challenge may
have been sufficient to elevate it

Sure. I’m just stating the directives that we get each season
from our association/IFAB/UEFA. Those types of tackles have been
the focus of a number of occasions.
Oliver, as VAR, would input if he thought it was a red - with
which I agree with him that it’s not.
It’s messy because it’s a very obvious missed caution, and I do
realise that UEFA directives are seldom widely shared, which is
(imo) a huge weakness of wider understanding of how officials
operate.

Just afterthought Xaka incident a Leeds player received a yellow
card for a less serious offence. This to me summed up a very
inconsistent performance from Mariner who I have always highly
regarded. I thought he had a poor game as did the crowd.

I haven't seen a clear image of it but it looks from what I have
seen to be at least partly, if not mainly on the ankle.

hit the ankle, therefore, according to the Directive a red card.
What was VAR doing.

Watching the game live on tv, after a wasted 5hrs round trip to
birmingham, i thought red immediately and havent seen anything
to change my mind. Gary Neville said on commentary xhaka has a
nasty streak in him.
Have to say andre wasnt at his best today, perhaps it was that
damned yellow shirt curse !!

Watching motd, can't say I can see it being upgraded to a red.
Both challenges, one from xhaka one from Leeds players, pretty
much exactly the same. Both yellows at most As on the boot. Good
consistency from Marriner and Oliver
