Watched the MOTD highlights and totally happy with the penalty
decision. On 1st viewing it looks like th defender cleanly plays
the ball. On watching the replay the challenge is reckless and
only slightly touches the top of the ball. This is the correct
decision and fee the delay in giving was about Taylor giving
himself a second to play it through. Even the pundits agreed it
was a penalty. Well done Taylor

If that’s a penalty then for me the game has gone regardless of
what clueless managers or uneducated pundits say

Nice to see Anthony continuing the run of rubbish penalty
decisions…. In fairness going to Peter Bankes looking for
guidance is a waste of time considering some of the decisions he
made the weekend….

Unless, there’s another angle I haven’t seen it’s not a foul for
me. It’s a clumsy tackle as the ball is won with the right foot
and the left leg comes through, but it’s not a scissor motion
and the contact doesn’t look significant.
The caution can only be given for reckless, as a case could be
made. It’s simply not DOGSO though, as Lacazette has limited
control, direction is moving away from goal, and a covering
defender is there. I’d say he’s overthought it, and clearly
wasn’t sure.
All of that said, I don’t see a VAR intervention happening here.
This is not an obviously wrong decision. VAR only intervenes if
the referee’s explanation is entirely counter to what VAR
observes. I highly doubt that will have occurred.

As it was a second caution DOGSO doesn't come into the
equation.
Penalty for me but doubtless I will be given heaps and accused
of defending a mate (not that he needs defending btw)

IMO, your opinion is as valid as anyone else's, mate or not. I
get a few of the very boring "you're just defending your mate"
comments along with a few of "you're only slating him cos you
don't like him" ones! They're pathetic & tiresome but just do
what I do and laugh at them!

Unless I am misunderstanding your point, it certainly could have
been a DOGSO yellow for a genuine attempt to play the ball.
Like bmb I do agree that the “defending your mate” like is a
rather lazy argument - and one I’m sure I have been guilty of in
the past. A reminder for me to always play the ball on here and
not the person!

Your opinion, as bmb states in the next post to yours, is of
course an entitlement to offer. Personally how I tend to
evaluate opinions is in attempting to see the ground of their
being offered. If a poster comes on RTR fairly consistently
acting as Counsel for the Prosecution or Counsel for the Defence
for a particular referee then I will interpret the opinion
accordingly. I haven't gone back over your many, often well
argued posts, but my sense is that most often you act as Counsel
for the Defence for Anthony Taylor and so I tend to view your
comments through that prism.
I am not sure I act as Counsel for any current serving referee
but in referees of yesteryear then quite obviously I an Lead
Counsel on behalf of Joe Worrall and against Alan Turvey so in
neither of those two cases could I claim neutral jurisdiction.

As some seem to set great store on Mr Clattenburg's opinions,
here are his views. Using Whistleblower's analogy, I would
never claim to be a Lead Counsel on behalf of MC as a referee
and therefore I personally attach no special significance to his
remarks now. Whether Messrs Gallagher and the seemingly
unpopular Hackett would agree with him I don't know.
