Felix Brych

Felix Brych brought his international career to and end tonight
having been a FIFA referee since 2007. I would just like to say
that personally I always really enjoyed Dr. Brych officiate, he
showed such enthusiasm, dedication and effort in every single
game I saw him referee. He always presented a determined image
and really looked like he was really doing his best - never just
going through the motions and I am sure this was appreciated by
the players he officiated.
While a nuanced referee who understood the modern game and the
desire for referees to manage the occasion rather than take
punitive action, he was also a referees referee so to speak who
never shirked applying the law even on the very biggest stage. I
think he has been one of the few referees who could have been
appointed to any game in Europe over the last 10 years and more
often than not come through with flying colours. With himself
and Kuipers now gone UEFA have lost two referees who were truly
of great class, the next generation of officials have big shoes
to fill in this regard.
Dr. Brych is a fantastic referee with a fantastic CV of fully
deserved finals, huge UEFA KO matches and WC games. I will miss
seeing him in the centre of the cauldron of European footballs
biggest matches. Best wishes for the future Felix!

I echo your sentiments , I said on another thread not long ago I
could watch Brych referee all day , he has a really nice style,
clear signalling exudes confidence and authority, he makes even
the biggest games look easy I simply cannot remember many of any
controversies that he’s had if any
Always a joy to watch him referee , the only ones coming through
that really stand out for me are Slavko Vincic , Tamas Bognar,
and Daniel Siebert the latter after a bit of a poor start

I have to say that the only time I saw Felix live - the Olympic
QF, Brazil v Honduras at St James' Park in 2012 - he was
dreadful, with yellow cards being brandished from the KO and
Honduras being reduced to 10 men by the half-hour via an
unnecessary 2nd yellow, which spoilt the game for the thousands
of neutrals like myself who were rather hoping that Honduras
could produce an upset. It was noted that Felix did not referee
again at the tournament and Clatts was awarded the Final at
Wembley. I'm pleased that Herr Brych has done well since that
'bad day at the office' and I would agree that whenever he has
been seen on TV, he's always seemed calm and in full control of
the proceedings. I wish him well in whatever he does in his
future life inside and outside of the game.

Congratulations on a wonderful career to Herr Brych and the very
best wishes for his retirement. Hopefully he will join up with
Kuipers in a senior UEFA role and be one of those bringing on
the next generation of referees. Big loss off the field but an
opportunity to utilise him on the training ground instead. If
not utilised by UEFA I'm sure we will see him pop up somewhere
as "head of refereeing".

Bognár Tamás is 43 so he's not coming through anywhere. He
should have been promoted to elite when Kassai Viktor retired
but lacks CL experience.

The one thing I would say about Felix, is that even before I
started officiating (only qualifying in 2011), I already knew
his face. He’s one of those officials I ‘grew up’ with so
despite having zero personal connection with him, much like
Kuipers, I’ll genuinely miss him being around.
There have only been a few over the years whose faces most fans
would recognise, and generally would be pleased (of perhaps
neutral, knowing most fans…!) to see at their game.

I think Brych has definitely been one of the best, most reliable
referees in Europe over past 10 years.
The only thing that might bring him a little below some is it
never quite seemed to happen for him at major tournaments etc. I
remember he only did Serbia V Switzerland at 2018 WC and
consensus was he mised a clear penalty. And I think there was a
very debatable red card in the 2017 Champions League final.
UEFA will certainly miss likes of him, Kuipers and Skomina, all
going in very quick succession.
