I don’t understand how Atkinson hasn’t give that on the field as
a penalty.

Yep that is a stonewall penalty for me. I was surprised he
didn't see it live.

Yep very poor. One of the most clearest penalties you’ll see!

We are talking about Arsenal here though. They have previous on
not doing the sporting thing

De Gea has previous, claiming Van Dijk fouled him and getting a
perfectly good goal disallowed at Anfield. I read that he also
did the same for Spain against England but I don’t remember
that.
Atkinson applied the Laws and the decision was correct.

Thought Atkinson was spot on with the arsenal opening goal . Can
understand Atkinson not giving the Utd penalty in real time as
the ball didn’t really move much so from Atkinsons angle which
was from behind it looked like the arsenal player got the ball
first .
Overall a typical Atkinson performance let the game flow and
kept cards in his pocket I think only mctominay was booked and
that was a nailed on YC

If the views above are right, then I really do need to go to
specsavers. I thought it was an Arsenal player in yellow who
trod on de Gea's foot which caused the injury. Didn't the
pundits comment on that - the sound was on low so I didn't hear
much of the half time discussion?
What did Clattenburg have to say?

All the pundits agreed that it was fred who trod on de gea, as
did clattenburg.

Yes, I've read a couple of reports that both said it was Fred -
I should have known!!
Must admit I wasn't paying full attention during parts of the
game as we were chatting at the same time.
Have to say that having seen the replay I was surprised Atko
didn't give the penalty straightaway. Maybe he didn't have the
best angle to give him the benefit of the doubt. At least Andre
Marriner was awake.
It was an entertaining game with only 1 (correct) YC, so credit
to the players, and apart from the penalty I thought Atkinson
was fine.

Perhaps he thought he was still reffing the West Ham vs United
game.

Martin Atkinson clearly saw that De Gea was on the ground with
his back to play before Smith Rowe took his shot. He moved his
whistle to his mouth but opted not to blow it until after the
ball went in the net (when there was actually no need to blow it
all) presumably in line with the wait-and-see VAR protocols. We
are told time and again that player safety must be our number
one priority. Martin Atkinson had had no chance to assess how
serious the injury was. On a safety-first principle he should
have stopped play immediately. Safety must override VAR
protocols.
Now, consider a slightly different scenario. If De Gea had been
seriously injured, or at least pretended to be, and was
immediately substituted, would VAR have decided that Martin
Atkinson was wrong to have allowed play to continue and that the
goal should be disallowed? And if not, what is the point in
waiting to blow the whistle until the ball is in the net?
