Michael Salisbury - Crystal Palace v Aston Villa

Sounds like he didn't have the best debut from highlights on
MOTD
Palace were unhappy when he blew for a foul and if he had waited
they had an opportunity on goal.
He then gave a red card straight away to a Villa player (Douglas
Luis) for SFP which definetly wasn't, possibly a bit too eager,
and was overturned by VAR after asking him to go to the monitor.

The red card was completely understandable at full speed - and I
think a lot would have gone red before VAR checked it. I do
think yellow was the correct decision, but it was understandable
why he initially went red.

FFS, give the lad a break. This was always going to be a testing
debut for any new SG1 and I thought Michael acquitted himself
well. Stopping play for the yellow card incident, instead of
playing an advantage, was understandable as it was a nasty
challenge and these clapped out ex-pros giving "expert analysis"
need to get a grip. The Challenge by David Luiz looked red in
real time, but on reflection a yellow was more appropriate.

I think he showed some very good qualities in this game, from
the highlights I have seen. He presented a good calm image and
didn't to my eye looked flustered or hurried in his body
language. Yes some mistakes in terms of the advantage he should
have played and I'm sure every first time SG1 referee dreads an
OFR however as greeny has said his real time call was one I
think many would have made from his (correct) position. I
expressed on the appointments thread that I am still not
convinced it is a totally clear and obvious error even if yellow
is definitely a better call.
He also made a good call on a YC for SPA rather than a RC for
DOGSO after coming under some significant pressure from the
players to go red.
On the whole a challenging enough debut and while he made some
mistakes I think he showed some promising signs and I hope he is
appointed again very soon.

I am not into refereeing predictions, but I would venture he'll
next be seen (once) over the busy Christmas / New Year period.

From the brief highlights i have seen i would agree with you
dublinref.
Douglas luiz was lucky, on another day another var wouldnt have
intervened.
Dont think michael can be disappointed with his prem debut, as i
said when initially appointed it would be a difficult game for
him. There have been a few nasty temper flare ups in recent
matches between the two teams and a few red cards.
As for Palace being disappointed advantage wasnt played, this
can happen to any ref no matter how experienced or
inexperienced.

I was at Selhurst Park for the first time in 2 years and was
looking forward to seeing Michael making his PL debut. I have
mixed views. Yes, OK, he didn't look like a 'rabbit in
headlights' as Stuart Attwell might have done in his early days,
but Michael never seemed to be in control of the game. This
started in the first few minutes when he spent an inordinate
amount of time trying to get a wall back the required distance
at a Villa free kick, with players on both sides taking the p*ss
basically (not shown on MOTD), and from then on, it seemed that
every decision he made led to him being surrounded by players of
both sides. Sadly, on the one occasion that Michael could have
played a good advantage to the Palace, he blew his whistle too
soon, cue more scenes (shown on MOTD). The red card incident
involving Luiz certainly didn't look like a sending off offence
from where we were sitting, and we were not surprised when the
decision was overturned, although I applaud Michael for acting
on what he saw. Villa players had a remarkable propensity to
fall over 'injured' and it ended up a tetchy affair and not
worthy of one of the top Leagues in the world. A friend, who has
lived in Scotland and followed Rangers for many years, commented
that the game had Gerrard written all over it, with the wily new
manager knowing full well that Michael was making his PL debut
and getting his players to exploit this to their advantage. I am
sure my friend was correct, and to that end, Gerrard was
successful, but it didn't make for a very good spectacle. I've
seen some indifferent performances from 'newbies' at Gresty
Road, including Chris Kavanagh who has gone on to higher things,
and my hope is that Michael will put this down to lack of
experience and come out of it stronger for next time, whenever
that may be.
