Thanks for a good start- credit to Accy Grammar! Three of the
four correct. The other, number 3, is defensible, but I was
thinking of a town, rather than a river.

No answers to contribute but I have to admit, much to my shame,
that I remembered every word from the teletubbies theme song, oh
& have the blimmin thing stuck n my head now! 15 years to forget
the trauma of bmb jr laughing as the TV blared out Tinky Winky,
Dipsy, La-la, po... Thanks JCFC [emoji31]

       Sorry for the earworm, bmb.
Sorry, too, that I could not find a suitable Hungarian
       candidate.
Good to see that someone is looking at it anyway.

       Thanks for your answers, bmb.
Number 7 is definitely correct - I had thoughr the phrase was
Harold Wilson's, but apparently he copied it from George Brown,
presumably at a time when the latter was not "tired and
       emotional" (as a newt.)
Number 5 is undeniably correct - Etain is indeed the fFrench for
the metal and there is a very small town of that name near ther
border with Belgium and Luxemburg, but I had in mind somewhere
much more familiar to English people.
Number 2 is one of the harder ones, I think, and the friends who
were the original recipients needed a further hint.
Number 11 was clearly visible in Brighouse's Commercial Street
and in most other towns of any significance in England.

May be able to add a few more when time permits extensive use of
       thinking cap, but for now:-
       14 Lyon
       29 Athens
       37 Bordeaux
Some of the others look rather tricky!
