Agreed. Especially in the first half, there were some moments
where it felt like everything could boil over, but Oliver kept a
calm head, and in the end, it was all rather academic for him.
His ability to communicate on the players level (as former
top-scene youth player himself), even across culture lines in
international matches(!), is quite unmatched I think. Good job
indeed by our English team, well done to them.

I gather behind the scenes Neil Davies was having to contact
Darren England by phone and then he would relay the messages to
Michael as the comms between the 4 on pitch officials were
working, it was only the link between the VAR & them that was
down. Then a set of walkie talkies were found for them to use.
The techie peeps got it back working over half time but I think
it kept fading in and out during the 2nd half again. They
improvised well but must have been pretty stressful for them all
in such an important game. The VAR was without his AVAR for
periods during the game because he was off sending smoke signals
(ok not quite that bad, but...) to the 4O so VAR was also
covering AVAR and the 4O must have looked like some gangbanger
with a phone, walkie talkie & the comms on the go! I'm sure they
will all laugh about it one day!

Re watching the clips his communication was exceptionally good
today, you could see the players really listening and taking in
the explanations and appreciating the openness in communication.
It led to no dissent and an acceptance of the decisions without
question. The guy who committed the handball was clearly upset
but I think in all honesty he was more upset with himself giving
away a penalty.

All I can do is laugh but must have been very stressful
