Brighton v Newcastle - D Coote

Thought the penalty looked a bit soft, considering the law has
now contact doesnt mean penalty.
Definetly not a clear and obvious error by Coote IMO so not sure
why Pawson made him to to monitor

Is there a more overrated referee in the PL than David Coote.
Runs around the pitch with such arrogance which I wouldn’t mind
if his decision making was good. 2 big decisions today both
clearly wrong and bailed out by VAR

Totally agree, too soft but as soon as Pawson sends him over its
a penalty
For the red card, correctly intervened as in real time look
likes a dive to get sanchez sent off but after a couple of
highlights he comes to right decision of DOGSO therefore red
card

I agree entirely ajb95. How a PL & FIFA Referee can miss major
KMIs such as those beggars belief.

I think Pawson had saved Coote's day. The penalty wasn't too
soft for me and it should be penalised without VAR intervention
- Clark clearly came into contact with Trossard by his arm and
leg. RC to Sanchez for DOGSO was spot-on.
IMO Coote's lack of confidence keeps him from a higher level.

David Coote was the VAR who didn't notice Jordan Pickford
potentially ending Virgil Van Dijk's career while he obsessed
about offside so I'm not overly surprised he misses blatant
fouls in real time.

I didn't think that he handled these two incidents that badly.
Whilst the penalty should probably not have needed VAR
confirmation, in real time I am less sure that the Sanchez
incident was that clear. From my position in the opposite stand
it seemed possible that Sanchez took at least some of the ball,
and I wouldn't criticise David Coote for seeking advice from the
VAR before judging it to be DOGSO (which it was).
I haven't seen Mr. Coote more than a few times live, and my
overall impression is that he starts well, but becomes rather
card-happy before the end of the first half. A grand total of 7
YCs and 1 RC didn't really represent an accurate reflection of
the game.

Only saw highlights but felt bit sorry for him with the two VAR
decisions. I think his instincts on first one were that the
forward had felt a ‘contact’ then taken a step or two and then
gone down - I’d be happy for ref to wave those away, but once
the VAR calls him over, it’s harder.
Again with the DOGSO, it didn’t look natural. The striker seemed
to go on and then ‘go down’ - but this time because GK had
caught the attacker’s leg which then tripped himself. (Unlikely
a forward would go down falsely in that area anyway).
I’ll mention the kit colour issue as well yet again. Why both
the GK and Coote are both in bright yellow is unfathomable -
other GK in dark yellow/amber and both the aqua and purple would
be ideal alternatives for the officials. Just poor whether from
officials (or whichever admin is incapable of organising it
properly).
