Not the best way to return to action. Then again it is entirely

The guy made a mistake which he owned up to. Both teams,
although probably confused, seemed to accept it. That said, the
early break seemed to allow a player who should’ve been sent off
to be substituted, which I think is probably the bigger problem
here.

I am not a great logician but have always subscribed to the
general theory of ' If A then not not A ' If the first
half of this match ended when the 4 minutes, on return from the
break in the changing rooms was completed, then the break in the
changing rooms when, presumably refreshment was taken, cannot
have been the half time break because half time had not yet
occurred. What was it then ? An improper break ? A referee's
time out ? A hiatus in play ? Such a matter is almost worthy of
one of A P Herbert's Misleading Cases.
There is a sort of hint in some contributions that I have it in
for Alan Young. Not so and indeed I have never met the
gentleman. I have seen him referee twice. One average and one
truly appalling performance. On the basis of those two sightings
I would say that he is by no means the strongest referee of his
cohort and his absence from EFL would not be a sore burden.
However, two matches is a small sample on which to form a
judgement so I am quite prepared to accept the testimony of
those who have seen far more matches of his and rate him highly.
Therefore I leave it to others to decide whether his actions in
this match were that of a referee in full control of
proceedings.

Haven't seen the game,complete news to me this am.
However,what was his general refereeing of the game like,this
incident apart?
I did see a referee of SG 1 standing [who many are clamouring to
be given a PL game],make a wrong decision yesterday which may
have affected the game.Will he never get a PL game and go back
to SG 2 because of this?
I do not know Alan Young and have never seen him,but what was
his refereeing of the game like,as a whole?
Interesting to know who was assessing etc

Personally I think there's a big difference between
misinterpreting a good tackle as a foul, which every referee
will unfortunately do at some point, and four officials failing
to add on additional time before prematurely blowing for half
time, which I've never heard happen before at professional
level.
There are some mistakes that can be expected as a normal part of
someone's job and some that would have you question their
basic level of competence.

Yes,it is a bad mix up,but did it affect the result of the
game?I still would like to hear about the rest of the
performance.I have just read the BBC report which mentions that
Pratley,already yellow carded,deliberately handled the ball but
was not sanctioned further.Doesn't augur well for the report
on the refereeing.

Agree with you Readingfan. What the so-and-so was the 4O doing
not pointing out to Young his error before the players and
officials left the field? It was not as though the added time
was 1 minute which could probably have been explained away.
Baffling!

I've not seen any Orient or Hartlepool fans on here, so you
might be struggling.
Regardless, though, this thread isn't about his overall
performance, is it?

It does seem very strange all told. Presumably Young used the
Comms set to tell the 4th how many added minutes were to be
shown on the board and were these shown ? The ARs also would be
wearing watches would they not. Perhaps there was an equipment
failure. I wonder how and when Young realised or was told the
added time had not been played.

I didn’t see what happened but it’s largely agreed it’s an
oversight from the referee pertaining to the laws of the game.
From a cricket umpiring perspective, players and coaches will
accept the odd error in regards to actual decisions but to make
a mistake in regards to the laws/regulations is a big no no. It
will cause a major talking point more than an actual decision if
you stuff up on the laws of the game. This it seemed applies to
Alan Young yesterday.
