I think that VAR might have been helpful to the referee as it
would have given him a perspective of Ronaldo's forceful
(violent) kick of the ball. The referee was not well sighted
and that AR may have been too close. Its one where AT may have
still gone yellow, but he would have certainly benefited from
the additional view from another angle.
Personally, I would have gone red, but perhaps another "umpire's
call" ??

I don't know the extent of Kieta's injury but I think that a
referee's prime responsibility is to protect safety. If the
instruction to referees is to try and avoid red cards for
incidents like Ronaldo's then I think that they do the game a
disservice. Had Ronaldo been dealt with properly I believe that
other players would have seen where the bar had been set and
been more circumspect, then perhaps Kieta's injury might have
been avoided.

You can’t send someone off to simply give a warning. Besides,
they were in different halves and generally the game’s
discipline wasn’t poor.
Also, Ronaldo, whilst pushing his luck wasn’t obviously guilty
of VC. He very much kicked the ball, even if he got some of the
man. The force wasn’t very obviously excessive.
All of that noted, I don’t think VAR would have overturned, but
a sending off wouldn’t have been correct IMO.

Two other potential red card incident as well.. Fred's foot into
the head of a Liverpool player... Greizemann sent off for
similar v Liverpool, and Bruno's challenge on Curtis Jones in
the second half. Felt Maguire should have been sent off for
DOGSO, and Ronaldo was very lucky.

If you swing your leg at something there is a lot of force
behind it. Also the point that it was his 2/3rd attempt, it was
after the whistle.

He knew that he had committed the foul, he then followed that up
by kicking the ball when it was lodged against the body of his
opponent, in short, he knew exactly what he was doing!
Had the boot been on the other foot and it was him being given
the same treatment by a player from a 'lesser' club ---we know
what would have happened and who would have been complaining
loudest!

Only saw highlights on MOTD but extremely surprised that Taylor,
who appeared to have a good view, did not issue an immediate red
card to Pogba for a pretty dreadful challenge which seemed to
tick all the boxes for a dismissal. Surely one expects better
from one reckoned, by the authorities, to be among the very best
in Europe ? Attwell, clearly making a very good name for himself
domestically and internationally as a VAR, certainly ensured
that the correct sanction was eventually applied.

I was astonished that Anthony Taylor didn’t immediately send
Pogba off. Even from the away section it was clearly a red card.
The McGuire one looked like DOGSO but as a Liverpool fan I’m
happy for him to stay on. Hard not to guffaw at eighty million
pounds 😁

This may seem off topic but please indulge me.
Today I went to watch an FA Women's Cup tie.
Toward the end there was a challenge, resulting in potentially
serious injury to a home player and less so to the other player.
From our different positions 4 of us, Referee AR, Level 3
spectator and myself, came up with different outcomes.
I said RC for away player, no sanction against home.
Other suggestion were 2 YC, YC to away player and two RCs
Oh for VAR

Yes, he did it not once but twice = definite red card in my
view.
