Thoughts on the Brighton penalty?
How far should VAR go back and the definite offside around 20
seconds before Ederson cleaned out the Brighton player?
Friend has been quick with the cards this evening, and a few
awkward moments but nothing completely disastrous.

Interesting one as to how far you go back for the offside, last
season i think var would have flagged up the offside.
I guess the answer lies in whether city had time to reset and
does reset mean having chance to or playing the ball.
As with many interpretations nowadays i have to say not sure i
can answer and probably only the match officials or their bosses
can.

Didn’t city have a similar incident last season which resulted
in a goal. So I suppose it’s swings and roundabouts. At least
they’re being consistent

It was offside. A matter of fact, not interpretation. If the
player had scored would VAR have looked at the offside and ruled
the goal out.

It was offside. A matter of fact, not interpretation. If the
player had scored would VAR have looked at the offside and ruled
the goal out.

Yes, but that’s not the point being discussed. VAR is not there
to re-referee games. It is there to correct - for want of a
better term - gross miscarriages of justice.
There needs to be a point in a passage of play where innocuous
or non-critical decisions are not part of any review. Where that
line sits is a decent and reasonable debate, but its necessary
existence is not.
Once another team has possession and opportunity to play, that
is a perfectly sensible point to ‘reset’ the return point of any
VAR review.
(Even if a team has sole possession, a number of passes in
attack would also seem quite sensible. Decisions that have no
impact in the scoring of a goal are irrelevant to the purposes
of VAR).

On the basis of that argument you would expect that a player
running back from an offside position to collect the ball would
have negated the offside decision as the defence would clearly
be back in a reasonable position for the forthcoming play. That
not being the case, logically it seems to me that unless the
defending team actually play the ball between the offside
position and the critical incident then the offside decision
should stand. Of course logic and the interpretation of the
laws can be strange bedfellows.

In all leagues below the elite PL, if the AR was doing his job
correctly, the flag would have gone up and the offside given.
Different Laws and interpretation at the top level and we wonder
why there is a big shortage of officials in grassroots football.
