Clear penalty IMO - attacker gets there first, defender kicks
attacker before playing the ball. There was time remaining of
the minimum two added minutes at the time of the foul, so he's
correct to have allowed the goal from the rebound.

Gosh that's a tricky one, perhaps indicative by the time VAR
took in deciding to request an OFR and Pawson spent looking at
the monitor. I understand what Mikael is saying with that
interpretation but I'm not convinced. My inclination would be to
say 'Referee's call' but I'm certain if Pawson had awarded the
penalty, some other VARs and not just Oliver, would not have
intervened. Whether other VAR's would have intervened with the
no-penalty decision is anyone's guess.

This looks to be another one where "umpire's call" should have
prevailed. Both giving a penalty and not giving a penalty could
have been defended and that suggests that VAR should have
reviewed but not intervened.
I do believe that, when the VAR check is over, the fact that it
is within that grey area ("umpire's call" / "referee's call")
should be broadcast. It will not end the debates but it will
reinforce the message that VAR will not re-referee every
decision, but it will intervene when something has been missed
or - to use the cricket phrase - "overturn the shocker".

I would quite like a referee to go over to the monitor, have a
look and stick with their original decision. Might take some
bottle and might upset the camaraderie between the refs but as
many have said, VAR shouldn’t be getting involved here.
For me not a foul, minimal contact and lacazette dived over to
make sure there was a decision to make.

In reply to your comment abt time remaining, i couldnt disagree,
but i would say how often do referees add
On the correct amount of time from incident to the time play
stopped, i would say very infrequently but the referees being
the sole arbiter of time keeping might disagree with me.
I prefer the rugby system for time keeping, ie independent time
keeper but the referee signals when time is to be stopped during
the game. It may happen via comms with fourth official but then
there is no transparency.

Didn't Chris Kavanagh do exactly that towards the end of last
season - only to get roundly criticised by many on here!!!

Didn't Chris Kavanagh do exactly that towards the end of last
season - only to get roundly criticised by many on here!!!

I seem to recall Marriner and Taylor sticking to their original
decision prior to that, which drew general approval. However,
if the bar has been raised in terms of what is "clear and
obvious", isn't it less likely to happen now?

Taylor def stuck with his decision in a villa game last season,
i think v palace at villa park around the xmas period, after
pawson sent him to the screen.

Yes but how many OFR have there been? And how many have stuck
with their decision. It’s a very small number in a wide pool. As
soon as the ref goes to the monitor, no matter what he sees the
opposite decision will be made
