Craig Pawson : Arsenal vs Aston Villa

Oh dear imo a poor first half by Pawson books Watkins within the
opening 90 seconds a couple of arsenal players could easily
have been carded but no sanction from Pawson the arsenal penalty
on the stroke of half time I’m not fully convinced is there
sufficient contact for a penalty ? Is it a clear and obvious
error ? Not for me MPawson just doesn’t look as confident as
he has done for the past few months

I thought the penalty decision was terrible…. Lacazette was
already falling over before the contact and I certainly wouldn’t
have called it a clear and obvious error.
Even Pawson clearly mouthed “played the ball” which Targett did.
The problem is that as soon as Oliver calls Pawson to the
monitor it’s going to be given. 🙄

I agree, but if Oliver says it's a penalty can't see many of his
colleagues would overrule him. Makes me even more worried about
tomorrow lunchtime :)

Like me and TTFL say it wasn’t s clear and obvious error so VAR
Michael Oliver shouldn’t have got involved

Have I misrecalled the law or should play not finish when the
kicker kicks the ball for the second time ?

I thought a penalty kick could be taken after time us up but I
never thought further time for a second bite of the cherry could
be added on. I know with a kicks from the penalty mark shoot
outs the kick is completed when the referee decides and in such
a case the follow-up wouldn’t be allowed. Surely the same
principle applies when time is up?

For me, yes an arsenal fan, Pawson had an alright game. I missed
the first 3 minutes, so missed the Watkins booking so can't
comment. I thought it was a penalty real time but lacazette
throwing himself to the the floor didn't help. Yes Matt Targett
gets the ball but he goes through the man to do so, so I think
Michael Oliver is correct to send Pawson to look at it. I think
he missed a couple of yellow cards but all the ones he did give
were correct

Here is a quote from ifab.
Quote:
Additional time is allowed for a penalty kick to be taken and
completed at the end of each half of the match or extra time.
When additional time is allowed, the penalty kick is completed
when, after the kick has been taken, the ball stops moving, goes
out of play, is played by any player (including the kicker)
other than the defending goalkeeper, or the referee stops play
for an offence by the kicker or the kicker’s team. If a
defending team player (including the goalkeeper) commits an
offence and the penalty is missed/saved, the penalty is retaken.
Unquote:
Unsure if this is the same if a penalty is awarded after a var
check, when the referee has blown the final whistle for the
half.
It did seem strange at the time, had pawson blown for half time
before going to the screen?, if he hadnt then i guess he would
add the remaining time on from when the kick was taken, hence
the rebound score being allowed and the restart taken.
If he had blown for half time the law would suggest the half
time whistle should be blown when the goalkeeper made the save
or latest when the attacker hit the rebound and thus no goal
allowed.
Tbh as a villa supporter i have to say villa were by far the
worst of the three teams on the field and were lucky
Not to have lost by a higher margin.
I did find that the referee seemed a little random and slightly
inconsistent with his production of yellow cards, especially
when fouls were committed by the team in red, sometimes things
go for you and sometimes they dont.
With regards to the penalty decision, i personally didnt think
there was a clear and obvious error, but our top fifa ref as var
did so we will have to accept that. As is often said read
tomorrows paper.
Whilst humans are officiating and are var operators we will
always have differing opinions and inconsistencies.
Well played the arsenal.

May I commend you Claretman for a model of a reasoned,
objective and fair minded post. I didn't see the match so can't
comment on its incidents but you as a supporter of the losing
team, set exactly the right tone. Extremely heartening to read.
Thank you.

Agree - Lacazette is actually late to the duel, and deliberately
puts his leg across Targett's in order to block the latter's
kick, and ensure he gets kicked himself.
It is actually more of a defensive freekick, than a penalty, to
be honest. It's a shame that because the incident 'looks' clear
from a rudimentary perspective, that Oliver felt that he could
not not intervene, if you get what I'm trying to say.
