A feature of this forum, in both its current and previous
incarnations, is that there will sometimes be posts defending
the indefensible, sometimes to the point of swearing black is
white! My issue with Ward's woeful performance yesterday is
that it was not just an isolated incident for the penalty but a
series of errors, including 2 KMIs. I wonder how the
'powers-that-be' who select and appoint referees at this level
view such performances. If they consider Ward a capable SG2
referee, and indeed are satisfied with the overall standard at
this level, then frankly there is no hope.
I couldn’t have put that comment better myself..
SG2 is in a mess at the moment. I cannot see any real top
quality talent on a par to Oliver when he was in the
Championship.
Joshua Smith seems to be one to keep a close eye on. Was
impressive at Fulham on Wednesday night and I don’t think I’ve
seen many, if not any bad reviews thus far.
Ward will be very disappointed I’m sure when he reflects on
yesterday’s disaster.

ever seen a ref fall for to give a penalty (maybe only a penalty

close). And it was so avoidable.
>

even more-or-less reaches the goal area and he makes absolutely
no dynamic sprint at all, just walking (out of shot) whilst
being twenty+ yards away. When the dive happens, the ref has a
zero angle, it is on the AR's blind(er) side, so the officials
guess, and get it totally wrong.

He certainly would have been much better placed to spot the
(non) offence, but that would require reverting to some version
of the diagonal system of control. This is seemingly
discredited by the powers that be and a referee adopting that
approach is not going to reach (or remain) at SG2 level. Which
is a shame, because I believe it significantly increases the
chances of getting the major decisions right. (editd to fix
quote thing)

What exactly would you suggest, given that it's only a

enough step up from that.

I cannot dispute the action taken against the player, given that
I have said many times that deception is one of the blights on
the game. However, you raise a serious anomaly. A player takes
a dive and the referee spots it so he gets a yellow card. Or he
takes a dive but the referee is too incompetent to spot it and
he gets a 2-game ban. That is madness. Take it another step
and suppose this game had been in the Premier league with VAR.
The penalty decision would have been overturned and the player
cautioned, but no 2-game ban. Effectively, VAR means that the
simulators escape with minimal sanction whilst lower league
players get banned.
A couple of weeks ago RefWatch was extended by 15 minutes
because of the discussion relating to 3 simulation incidents by
one player, Ronaldo. All deemed not to be penalties but no
sanction given for any of the dives, nor for the tantrums and
dissent that followed.
My solution to this farcical situation is quite simple. Make
simulation a red card offence with that 2-game ban to follow.
It would solve the situation overnight in my view, as the likes
of Ronaldo, Kane, Grealish & Co would need to adjust or risk
being suspended for half the season.
I think that making simulation a red card offence would make the
majority of referees err on the side of caution (excuse the pun)
and do nothing. The risk of being wrong will prevent any
sanction being applied.
If simulation is spotted (either by the on-field referee or VAR)
it should be a caution and a two-game ban, with increased
suspensions for repeat offenders.
If simulation is not spotted by the on field referee (and there
is no VAR) but subsequently "proved" - as is alleged in this
case - the same sanction should apply. A retrospective caution
and a two-game ban.
There must be a system in place to rid the game of this.
Players who simulate being fouled and players that simulate
being seriously injured when they are not do so on purpose with
the objective of deceiving match officials and gaining an unfair
advantage. Any such players (I am not naming anyone so I can
reasonably use the "c" word) are cheating the game and cheating
everyone who has an interest in it.
All top level games (and plenty of others) are now filmed. The
images should be used to identify and punish the guilty. The
disciplinary authorities will be - initially - very busy, but if
they stick to their guns and retain their backbone their
workload will reduce over time and the game will benefit.
