G WARD - Coventry v Fulham

Poor show from Ward thus far.
A few soft free kicks given against Coventry and missed a clear
corner kick when Fulham had a corner and it came off a Coventry
defender and went behind.
He really doesn’t inspire me with confidence in the Championship
IMO.

One of the worst performances in the Championship this season
from Ward. Where do I start?
The penalty decision was a clear dive with daylight in between.
How Ward and his AR have missed that is beyond belief.
Mitrovic was very lucky not to see red after his aggressive
posturing towards Ward after he was clearly body checked by the
Coventry defender. Another crass decision not to give a FK.
Several soft fouls given against Coventry in the first half and
Ward pulling up play at least three times when he could of let
it go when the attacking team had a great chance to break. I
think he only let one of the four chances run as an advantage.
Very, very poor.

This is why I miss VAR. The PK would've rightly been overturned
and in our previous two games, two clear offside goals (one for
and one against)

I do have to declare an interest as a Coventry City supporter,
but this performance by Ward was utterly appalling.
The worst decision of the first half was to allow the Fulham
goal which was caused by Mitrovic having hold of McFadzean's
shirt with both hands and pulling him over, which led to the
ball going into the net. As you say, his foul detection was
abysmal throughout.
In the second half, the penalty was as bad as I've seen for a
while. Clearly no contact but he couldn't point to the spot
fast enough. The only redeeming feature was it balanced up the
howler in the first half. It looked like one of those games
where the players just have no faith in the referee being able
to manage the game properly. It is probably fortunate that
those decisions ultimately did not decide the game.
The Mitrovic saga in the second half was shockingly weak
refereeing. Yes, he produced a yellow card quite quickly for
the initial dissent, then simply ignored a long, continuing rant
from the player when clearly a red should have appeared.
I know it has been said before, not least by me, but the
standard of the SG2 group's performances in the Championship is
dreadful, and getting worse. Who on earth are going to replace
the older members of SG1 as they approach state pension age?

I have only seen the highlights of the penalty incident but omg
its a dive all day, if for some reason his angle is blocked, the
lino should see that and say hey wait a minute, book him for
diving. Poor from ward

I remember watching Ward in the conference at Barnet and he was
totally out of his depth then. That season he got promoted to
the FL to my surprise. I have then seen him a number of times in
L1 and L2 and every time I saw him he was bad.
I do not support either Coventry or Fulham, I watched the game
and although we are very early into the season, his was the
worst performance I have seen whether live or on TV. He is
simply not good enough for Select 1 and I question whether he is
good enough for the Football League. I suppose he can only get
better....or can he??!!

I didn't watch the full match so I can't comment on Ward's wider
performance.
However, the penalty decision is one of the worst dives I have
ever seen a ref fall for to give a penalty (maybe only a penalty
which Mario Sánchez Yantén gave Saudi Arabia at WC 1998 is
close). And it was so avoidable.
Ward's movement is extremely static in this scene. The play even
more-or-less reaches the goal area and he makes absolutely no
dynamic sprint at all, just walking (out of shot) whilst being
twenty+ yards away. When the dive happens, the ref has a zero
angle, it is on the AR's blind(er) side, so the officials guess,
and get it totally wrong.
If Ward had moved leftwards as play demanded, then he would have
been positioned in this zone (see below), and gotten the
decision right.

I'm not a fan of Gavin Ward either, but I'm going to defend him
here.
Seeing it in real time from the "normal" camera angle, I thought
it was a penalty. Ward had the same sort of angle so I can
understand why he gave it.
However, when viewed from the camera behind the goal line (about
90° clockwise from the main TV/Ward view( and probably the best
angle, you can see it's a clear dive.
The assistant on the far side almost certainly didnt have the
best view to see it was a dive either.

No point defending the indefensible. Poor decision from someone
who unfortunately isn’t good enough to be refereeing at that
level. Problem is, can he be demoted, and are there good enough
officials in L1/L2 to replace him?

A feature of this forum, in both its current and previous
incarnations, is that there will sometimes be posts defending
the indefensible, sometimes to the point of swearing black is
white! My issue with Ward's woeful performance yesterday is
that it was not just an isolated incident for the penalty but a
series of errors, including 2 KMIs. I wonder how the
'powers-that-be' who select and appoint referees at this level
view such performances. If they consider Ward a capable SG2
referee, and indeed are satisfied with the overall standard at
this level, then frankly there is no hope.
