Josh Smith - Fulham v Swansea

Decent Championship game and once again, I’m pleased to report,
a decent refereeing performance.
Josh Smith is on his second season on Select Group 2, and he did
a sound job this evening. He has an unfussy, unhurried style,
and the players just got on with the job of playing the game
rather than putting him under pressure.
Some marginal calls in the first half, an early Fulham penalty
appeal, little in it for me and the rejection of the appeal was
the correct call.
Fulham’s first goal was a tight offside decision, and the
benefit went to the attacker as it ought to in those situations.
The only yellow card came for a Swansea player stopping a
promising attack by a shirt pull, correct decision.
Where Smith was impressive was in dealing with a couple of
player indiscretions, minor in nature but he made sure the
players got the message. Mitrovic conceded a free kick in the
Swansea area and the referee had a quiet word, no need for
histrionics or a card and that was good to see.
Silly incident at the end but again, Josh Smith got straight in,
calmed it down with a quiet, firm word and no need for cards.
The game then continued without further incident.
Quietly impressed with the referee, he’s young enough to be
considered for higher things, it will be interesting to see how
he would deal with two aggressive teams rather than the two
tonight who wanted to get on with the match.
Be interesting to hear what our Fulham correspondents made of
him, I’m sure he was a big improvement on Steve Martin, whose
performance was critiqued very amusingly the other week.

Only caught the second half and he was hardly noticed from what
I saw…
He dealt with the scuffle swiftly and sensibly.
No complaints at all and much better in comparison to Martin who
is quite frankly lucky to be in the Championship IMO.

I thought that he had an excellent game and agree totally with
UmpireIan's assessment.
Mitrovic's first goal would have been chalked off by VAR, just
as Chris Wood had his goal chalked off on Saturday at Leicester
----why? His toenails were offside! Thank goodness that they
have not resorted to VAR in The Championship!
Mind you, if Arsene gets his plans through, he would have been
onside anyway ---I wonder whether that may be adopted in the
next Law changes.

Great post UmpireIan, and I’m in total agreement. First time
I’ve seen Josh Smith and I was very very impressed, thought he
was fantastic. He’s everything you want a referee to be, cool,
calm and collected, you just automatically trust him, and it was
clear the players had respect. It was me who posted about the
calamitous Stephen Martin, and Josh showed tonight how it should
be done. Basically he’s the complete opposite of Martin as a
ref, and for that reason will hopefully go on to bigger and
better things. Best refereeing performance at The Cottage this
season by a country mile 👍🏼

I thought he did well overall, (wondering if he ever refereed
any of my children in his younger years as he seems familiar and
from Lincolnshire originally?). As others have said, an unfussy
almost anonymous style, which is always a good thing as a ref. I
agree on his decision for the (non) penalty and cannot blame him
for the offside goal, if anything the AR has to take the rap on
this one, as it was clear enough to see with the naked eye. I
kind of miss VAR as I don't like the injustice of offside goals,
this one ultimately didn't change the result, but the
ridiculously blatant one away at Bristol City on Saturday cost
us two points. Will be keeping an eye on Josh to see if he can
make it all way to the top.

He is originally from Bourne in Lincolnshire and started in the
Peterborough Junior Alliance League, if that's any help.

"Smith started refereeing on the Peterborough and District
Junior Alliance League aged 14 in 2006 following in the
footsteps of both his dad and grandfather."
