Jarred Gillett - the PL debut

Great first half handled by Gillett. Both teams were physically
aggressive so it was not an easy match to referee. 4 YCs were
shown in the first half, three of which were correct except for
the one Manquillo got - no foul IMO. The 40’ free kick call was
very impressive. Fan of his style.

Interesting as Gillet comes in for a lot of stick on the HYS
section of the BBC, inc one suggestion that he lost control
after 10 mins and another that this should be his 1st and last
PL game.
Amazing how folks’ views can differ so much but is that not part
of the beauty of RTR and similar sites?

Gillett was exceptionally weak from minute one displaying very
little control over the game. Allowed ridiculous play acting,
timewasting and dissent from both sets of players and stamped
very little authority on the game.
Example one... Darlow began timewasting at the start of the
second half. Gillett continuously tried to "manage" the
situation by talking to him/captain which made not one bit of
difference. Darlow was booked in stoppage time - this was
essentially a perfunctory crowd pleasing move which made
absolutely no impact.
Example two... Manquillo (already booked in the first half) gave
away a soft free kick towards the end of the game and
subsequently leathered the ball down to the other end of the
pitch well after the whistle. No second booking was forthcoming
for dissent.
Just two examples of how Gillett displayed no control,
consistency or authority over this game from start to finish.
The Manquillo incident in particular was absolutely
mindboggling!

I was out with a friend in Manchester today, we managed to catch
a pub showing both 12:30 ko's. If you want a referee performance
totally oblivious to obvious time wasting then Mike Dean with
Villa Keeper Martinez is your man. Not even a word spoken to him
throughout the 94 minutes. Very very weak refereeing from a ref
who has been on the list for over 20 years. But I suppose the
PGMOL are telling them to ignore it because if this was a game
in a league abroad, he would probably have been sent off in the
1st half. Atrocious refereeing.
Oliver looked fairly decent in the other game from what I could
see. Although wasnt watching properly due to alcohol
consumption!

Indeed seems to have polarised opinions. From the highlights I
picked up on only two things - like we discussed about Jon Moss
his positioning isn't fantastic but he didn't have any KMI
errors and secondly he didn't make the VAR signal for the VAR
awarded offside. Beyond that in the highlights it looked like he
did fine.
Did anyone else see the whole game? Would be interesting to see
more views on it as seems the two people here who saw the game
are very far apart in terms of their assessment of his
performance.

One has to say a fiery baptism for Mr. Gillett and a difficult
match to control by the sound of it.
But we all have to start somewhere don’t we. Even the most
experienced referees like Mike Dean, Anthony Taylor etc, come in
for plenty of stick, and I’m sure Gillett will learn from it. It
was a bit harsh of the crowd to shout “You don’t know what
you’re doing” when the late Watford goal was disallowed,
correctly! He does know what he’s doing, and will adjust to the
pace and aggression of the top flight after a short while. Give
him a chance!

You can't book a player for his first-time time-wasting. There
should be a process - gesture, verbal warning then caution.
Also, I was happy to see him not to fall for the crowd noise
easily. I can't see Gillett doing anything wrong about it.

As for the Manquillo incident, I think Gillett made a mistake in
blowing his whistle - no foul either IMO. That was why Manquillo
was frustrated. But he did kick the ball away, so I agree that
there should be the second YC for Manquillo's reaction despite
the wrong foul call.
Overall I think Gillett was doing well - not an easy match for a
new PL ref but he managed to calm things down and kept players
under control. I think he will have a bright future. We can not
expect a beginner to manage a match like Oliver did last night -
superb performance for him by the way!

You can't book a player for his first-time time-wasting. There

Yes you are right - sorry for using inaccurate statements to
express my point of view. Of course you can caution the player
for time-wasting, however, the real problem is that you can not
blame Gillett for not booking Darlow for his so-called
"time-wasting" at the start of the second half: every time after
Newcastle got a goal kick, Watford fans behind Darlow the goalie
started to make a noise. Was Darlow actually wasting time then
or just home fans giving pressure to him and the referee? Not to
mention that there should be gesture(s) and verbal warning(s)
before the caution for time-wasting, which I think Gillett had
done it well. So I don't think this is a good example of his
"weak performance".

Just been reading through some of the press reports on Jarred
Gillett’s performance and there is a spectrum of complete
vitriol “Go back to Australia - you’re rubbish” to Steve Bruce
and a few other people praising Gillett for handling a tough
game well. So I would say, it’s typical of the football culture
where you get two diametrically opposing views of particular
incidents. It’s all about handling pressure and from my
experience as a cricket umpire over 33 years, you will get
tested in your initial match at the highest level to see what
you’re made of. The Twitterati (never to be trusted for rational
comment at the best of times) are not giving the new guy a
chance. It’s one game, and would club’s supporters berate a
player for being indifferent on their debut? No. Being an
umpire, I can be objective about the performance of officials in
a lot of sports without resorting to cheap jibes.
By the way, Gillett got a mark of 6 from one newspaper, not
terrible, not outstanding either. Even the Sun newspaper praised
him, and they’re hardly referee friendly are they?
