Clattenburg's Autobiography

There is a longish article in today's Times about Clattenburg's
forthcoming autobiography 'Whistle Blower' ( a title about
which he has sought no proprietary
permission from me [emoji12] ) Of course one would need to read
the book in order to pass proper judgement but the flavour of
today's article confirms my long held impression that
Clattenburg is an egotistical character with little grace about
him. He is quite open in his disregard, contempt even, for some
senior figures in national and international refereeing.
Naturally he is most complimentary about Collina, whose
patronage he enjoyed greatly.
The article states that the severest and often most snide
criticism of senior referees comes from the cohort of referees
themselves. I have to say the article paints a rather shabby
picture of the whole business. Whether it is actually true or
just Clattenburg's rather unrestrained publicity to sell his
book, I could not say.

My opinion, from the rumour mill, what Clattenburg has said
himself and what we’ve seen publicly is that Clattenburg was
treated poorly by Reily and Elleray. So I can understand his
criticism of them from a professional standpoint.
The personal insults and comments on other referees
personalities is a real shame in my opinion and comes across
very immature - maybe the entire text will reveal more but it
doesn’t sit well with me to have a sly personal jab at people
who he knows get so much stick from the public (stick he bemoans
when directed at himself) and for me he has just given another
stick with which to beat them.
Clattenburg was a brilliant referee, the best I have ever seen
and in my opinion the best in Europe for about 10 years, this is
all rather sad.

A purely personal response this.
I will not be purchasing this item, nor, if at all possible,
reading it.
Talented Referee that he was I found him almost as arrogant as
one Mr Poll. That I can sort of deal with, a degree of self
confidence is required when operating at the top level.
What I cannot deal with was the almost perpetual "poor me"
outlook where all his difficulties seemed to be somebody else's
fault.

I fear I may have transgressed rule by my opening post and, if I
have, I apologise and do feel free to remove it.
The grey area comes though in that so much actual practice of
refereeing is intimately bound up with a referee's style and
that style is an expression of personality. My initial comments
were not, I believe, mere speculation but a comment on direct
quotes from Clattenburg himself ( who incidentally would
certainly have failed the RTR test in his comments on Elleray,
Riley and Atkinson ) published in a public forum. On reflection
it would be better to say that his comments were egotistical and
graceless, which they certainly were, and then leave it at that.

Indeed WB - a referee who I think enjoyed the spolight being on
him - a bit like Dean.
However despite his professional “controversy” an excellent
referee and the best since Howard Webb retired. Apart from
Oliver - I don’t see any other referee in England who will come
close to his achievements

For information, my comments were based on experience of the
aforementioned referee a number of years ago and various
published articles over the years

Mr Clattenburg certainly generating "interest" wherever he goes.
Started so well talking about female referees then dropped
himself in it when talking about "babies or refereeing". Oops!

When he finished refereeing he was rightly known as one of the
greatest referees this country has ever produced. I don't
understand why he's so willing to dismantle his reputation - the
bits of the book I've seen seem well beneath someone who rose to
the level that he did.

Read the entire book today and enjoyed it. The moderators here,
quite rightly, do not want commentary on anyone's personality
and I certainly do not intend to do this. What I will say is
that in context the snippets released to the media over the past
weeks do not read as badly IMO. To be clear I don't support Mr.
Clattenburg's comments on his former colleagues and don't think
insults are ever required but I do feel a bit differently about
the whole situation having read the book. I don't want to break
any of the rules here so I won't comment further.
I enjoyed the book and I think its fair to say that Mr.
Clattenburg has been through and awful lot and also achieved an
awful lot in his career. I wish him well.
