       Tony Harrington- Luton V Swansea

Good people of Rate the Ref could you please give your opinion
on the yellow card in the video. In my opinion as the ball is
dead because a free kick is awarded its violent conduct by the
Luton Player and should of been a red card instead of the yellow
       given, thoughts?

It's a really difficult one. You have to ask what the Luton
player is doing, it is clearly a free kick and he should be
moving away from the ball, not towards it. Has the Swansea
player already decided he is kicking it before the Luton player
steps in front of it, only he will really know that. Certainly
a caution for delaying the restart, and without seeing the build
up to it I'd probably say no sanction for the kicker. He's
entitled to take the free kick, the fact someone has chosen to
step onto the ball as he goes to kick it is his own fault. But
from that video you don't know if there was any niggle between
       the two prior to that.

Well to me he deliberately kicked an opponent end of story. Red
card all day. Nothing difficult about it at all.

I am usually in full agreement with rustyref but on this
occasion I will have to disagree. For me it is a clear red card.
Yes there is a clear delaying of the restart but I can’t believe
that the red player was simply trying to take the free kick. He
knew that he was going to kick his opponent and in my view it is
a very poor decision not to issue a red card.
Even if you take that he was genuinely trying to play the ball
and legitimately take a free kick with no malicious intent, I
think it certainly endangers the safety of his opponent.

Cause and effect. If you step in front of a bus just as it is
setting off you can hardly complain if you get hurt
As I said, I'd need to see the build up to it, but I really
don't have a huge amount of sympathy for the Luton player here.

For me, I think a red would have been harsh in this instance.
Whether he knew he was about to kick his opponent is something
we’ll never know for certain. Perhaps he knew but for me I would
only be issuing a red card if I was 100% certain it was
intentional violent conduct. I can’t tell that after watching
the clip a number of times so the officials on the day had no
       chance!

Barnsley no.23 - red card (VC)
       Swansea no.3 - yellow card (DtR/UB)
I would certainly like to be a player in the games of the users
who aren't convinced that no.23 didn't try to kick his opponent
       with excessive force! :)

I had a perfect view of this yesterday - I was looking directly
over it. For me, it was a fair enough call by Harrington but
clearly the footage doesn't look great. (I'm biased, I know).
What the video doesn't tell you very clearly is that Ryan
Manning was attempting to stop the free kick taking place by
kicking the ball away - he also went down holding his head. He
had already had at least one 'incident' with Lockyer in the few
minutes beforehand which caused a few handbags.
Lansbury does like a tackle and has a bit of a naughty streak I
think, but I don't think he would genuinely do something like
       that.
For me Harrington has been the strongest referee so far this
season in what had quite a few flashpoints with a fiery crowd.
He handled the situation well in my opinion because both players
were probably in the wrong. SG2 refs this season have been below
par in the games I have seen.

It only endangered the safety of his opponent because his
opponent was in a position he shouldn’t have been and without
mind reading we can not know if red knew what he was doing ,
unless 100% sure you would be guessing and to give a red in that
       situation would be wrong .
       [/quote]
I was thinking Charlie that it could fall under SFP which would
not require intent to be a factor but perhaps SFP can only apply
when the ball is in play? I must admit I’m not sure of the
nuance of the law on that one.
I take the point that one cannot be sure of what he is trying to
do but couldn’t that be argued with nearly every VC case? Can
you ever be totally 100% sure of anything on the pitch? For me
that seems as obvious a red as you could wish to see but it’s
interesting how differently people feel about it.
What I would be interested to know is what did the referee give
the yellow for? I would have thought this was red or, as
       Rustyref suggested, no sanction.
