So Simon has had 4 PL games, and made key mistakes in 2 off
them. Not a very good ratio! for someone who is meant to be one
of the best 18 referees in England.

I saw the hoo-hah about the performance of Hooper on Saturday
teatime, and the Austin interview, but due to a dinner
engagement didn't see the game until this morning.
There is nothing I can really add that hasn't already been
said, apart from there were two catastrophic decisions that
really should have been dealt with differently, BUT I want to
pass comment about Mark Hughes and his hypocrisy.
Some of you may recall five years ago this weekend my beloved
club Sunderland were at Stoke City who was managing at the time
when the match referee Kevin Friend sent off Wes Brown for
making a perfectly timed tackle where the ball took a different
course .In the referee's opinion it was reckless and the man was
played first.As stupid a decision as you will ever see that on
the previous forum caused a lot of debate. We ended up losing
0-2.
In fairness to the referee he recinded the decision
immeadiately and from what we could see got neccesary
development before refereeing in the PL again.
Mark Hughes however was the only person in the civilised world
who thought the tackle was outrageous and praised the referee's
courage for sending Wes off.
What goes around comes around Mr Hughes.That totallly wrong
decision to disallow a perfectly good goal could not have
happened to a better person.

I agree with everything you say after the opening sentence but
the comment about Charlie Austin being a disgrace who should
have the book thrown at him had me wondering if you are a Pompey
fan. Apologies of you aren't but they interviewed him straight
after the game when emotions were still raw and he had every
right to be angry. Lets be honest he wasn't exactly spreading
fake news because between them the officials had an absolute
shocker.

I can only agree that Hooper's performance was way short of what
is required at that level. He should be having a 'holiday'
after that, and there needs to be serious consideration of his
suitability to officiate at that level.
With regard to Austin's comments, I wonder whether those
slagging him off actually listened to what he said. Yes, he was
very critical of the officials, but that is understandable,
especially moments after the final whistle. But his real point
was that VAR would have resolved the issue and it's about time
we had it as officials need all the help they can get. He may
have been angry, but he made the point perfectly well.

What were the particularly disgraceful comments from Austin?
Which of his comments was not even true?
No-one who has seen Hooper plying his trade in the Championship,
or below, on a regular basis in the past will be the slightest
bit surprised that he has once again shown himself to be
woefully short of the standard required. The frightening thing
is that those who select our top officials appear to be
exercising chronically poor judgement time and time again.
On the plus side, wonderful campaigning for VAR from the
wretched Hooper.
On the minus side, more likely to have to endure him in the
Championship - for this season at least.

You're absolutely right about Austin, but it's often a standard
response on here to say something like "Throw the book at him"
instead of listening to what he's actually said.
Any book-throwing should be at Lennard, Hooper and the people
who have elevated him to a position he really isn't good enough
for.

If that was a manager saying those things they would get a fine
and a ban! Yes it was the heat of the moment but no player has
ever reacted like that in a post match interview!
If Watford get that penalty at 1-0 this incident never happens.
Is VAR just an excuse for poor officiating or poor officials?
Hooper shouldn’t be in the PL but it’s basic refereeing that
anyone should be getting right!

It’s a valid point about the Watford penalty, so what Austin
says is factually debatable. Can’t blame him feeling aggrevied
about the chalked off goal though and he won’t have been the
first to make injudicious comment after a perceived injustice on
the pitch.
I know am in a minority on here, but now we have professional
referees, they should be required to make themselves available
for interview in the same way as managers and players post
match.

Whatever Austin may think, had Watford had the penalty to me he
has to yellow card Bertrand who already had one by that stage
and there is no way Southampton could have played like that with
10 men. Quite clear from MOTD Hooper got a message from his
Assistant and he wasn't experienced enough or had some other
reason, not to over rule him.

Would they be allowed to point out mistakes made by players and
poor tactical moves from the managers ?

Along with all the attempts to try and deceive the referee
during the game, all the incidents of ill discipline etc. Bring
it on - I suspect it would be a very long interview in many
cases!
