Fran Jovic - Real Betis v Celtic

A game very much into the ‘quite challenging’ category within 25
minutes.
Very good caution for a reckless challenge by Soro. For those
struggling to understand the red card against AWB on Tuesday
night whilst expecting a red for the YB player - this is a
perfect example of the higher threshold caution. Soro’s tackle
is a poor one and studs straight into the Betis player’s foot.
The studs were clearly on the boot only, so a caution was
correct, however on the very highest threshold. No VAR check.
The changes in the last 12 months for SPA came into play shortly
after. Clear foul, that if advantage wasn’t given, was a stick
on second caution for Soro (clumsy trip/coming together from
behind). The referee however played advantage and so the caution
wasn’t awarded. Guardado was cautioned for very obvious dissent
at the next stoppage.
A goal was chalked off by the ref for handball, but VAR appeared
to show it came off the Celtic player’s chest, and so the goal
was allowed.
As I type, Celtic just awarded a penalty. Erratic and
unnecessary challenge by the Betis goalkeeper. Correct decision.
Betis will feel hard done by, but the decision making has been
completely correct so far (albeit with the assistance of VAR).

Which does raise the question of whether, when considering
whether to play advantage, we should take into account that not
doing so would result in a red card and possibly be a better
long-term advantage to the innocent party than allowing play to
continue.
