From distance it doesn't look much, when you see it closer up
it's a scissor tackle from behind. Agree it was dreadful.
Thoughts with Harvey Elliot and I'm sure we all wish him a full
recovery.

Just watched the incident in slow motion. If some of the
opinions on here about the challenge are genuinely what those
individuals think and they represent what "officials" both past
and those still involved in some capacity think then it is no
wonder the state and standard of our officiating has fallen
dramatically in recent years. There could not be a better
example for the phrase "officials know the rules but don't
understand the game".

What do you mean don't understand the game?? He's scissor kicked
his ankle from behind with a lot of force. I want to see
competitiveness and tackles etc. but this is a clear no-no. Bad
tackle, and correctly sanctioned

I can only presume what your intention is here. Asides from
being staggeringly wrong about your interpretation of
"endangering the safety of an opponent", you could really tidy
up your language.
Besides, player protection is hardly some sort of PC-term that
only referees want. Klopp was literally quoted as looking for
protection in the last matchday against Burnley, and then this
happens.
We can have a more nuanced discussion about edge cases, and the
Laws' purposes, but picking this hill to die on is an odd
choice.

I don’t think he would have been sent off if it wasn’t for the
injury, whether the tackle deserved a red is a different
conversation

As I understand things ( and interpretations change so often
it's hard to keep up ) intent now plays very little part in a
decision to show a red card. It's about endangering safety. Well
the unfortunate Elliott's safety was not only endangered it was
breached in an horrific way. Now I suppose you could argue that
every tackle has the potential to endanger safety so the
question is, was this a freak result of the tackle or a logical
consequence? Henry Winter in the Times avers that a red card
was the correct decision in response to the consequence of the
tackle and I am usually content to go along with Winter's view.

It's a lunge, from behind, off the ground. This isn't your
normal 'trailing leg' foul - there's nothing to absorb any of
the momentum, you've got the full force of the challenge being
transferred into the back of Elliott's leg/ankle (which
unfortunately for him was bearing nearly all of his weight).

A theory that was greeted with scorn on here when applied to an
illegal challenge that resulted in a broken nose and fractured
eye socket. Also, apparently, a goalkeeper having a tooth
extracted by a flailing boot after making a save doesn't even
warrant a stoppage in play.
