       J VALENZUELA - Brazil v Argentina
   DIR By: TheThingFromLewes

Reports coming in that police and health officials have entered
the pitch to remove players for failing to quarantine.
Difficult position for the officials and it looks very messy.

CONFIRMED: Emi Buendia and Emiliano Martinez of Aston Villa and
Giovani Lo Celso and Cristian Romero of Tottenham have been
ordered to leave Brazil and will NOT be allowed to play for
Argentina tonight after entering from the UK without
       quarantining.
       ----
Brazil I gather didn't call up any of their UK based players
because of this. Reading through the various tweets it is
strongly suggested Argentina locked themselves in at the hotel
and in the dressing room pre-match to prevent the health
       authorities access to them.
Difficult for the referee, nothing he could do really.
Should a 3-0 win be granted to Brazil in this scenario?
Sky Sports News reporter Paul Gilmour has just sent this in on
Brazil entry requirements and the issue of quartartine which is
at the centre of this farcical situation.
"Aircraft passengers who have been in the UK, South Africa or
India in the 14 days prior to arriving in Brazil must quarantine
for 14 days. Brazil has temporarily suspended all direct flights
from or via the UK, and has temporarily suspended permission for
foreigners who have been in the UK during the previous 14 days
       to board flights to Brazil.
"There are exemptions, including for resident foreigners, close
family members of Brazilian nationals (partners/spouses,
       children, and parents/guardians), accredited government
officials, and professionals working for international
organisations. This exemption is subject to a requirement to
quarantine on arrival in Brazil for 14 days. Some British
nationals have been denied boarding by airlines. You should
check with the airline before buying a ticket to confirm you
       will be allowed to board."
Would they not come under professionals working for
       international organisations?

They locked themselves in the locker rooms after the suspension
       of the game.
Although an exemption was granted to the Argentinian team after
negotiations between the Brazilian Federal Government, CBF, and
CONMEBOL. ANVISA (the Brazilian Health Authorities) ignored this
and headed to the team hotel to arrest the players and then
couldn’t find them so they went to the stadium to detain them.
Brazilian FA (CBF) have come out and stated this was not their
decision to suspend the game and they had argued for the match
to be played, which they had received clearance for from the
       federal government.
CBF have issued a statement saying they are “absolutely
surprised by Anvisa’s actions” and that these matters could have
been dealt with adequately way before.
The Federal Police arrived at the stadium 30 minutes prior to
kickoff and after a conversation with Conmebol, agreed to take
the 4 Argentinian players away after the match had concluded.
Anvisa, meanwhile, arrived moments before the players walked out
for the national anthems. Upon arriving, they were told of the
decision and overruled it before taking to the pitch.

The AFA (Argentine FA) and Argentine players are saying on TyC
Sports that the 4 players openly admitted and said that they
were in the UK prior to entering the country.

       What an absolute mess!
Feel very sorry for the fans who will have paid a lot of money
       to watch the game.
Good Luck to all of those sorting out the aftermath.

Quite possibly but presumably this is not something that can be
self-certified. Consultation with the relevant agencies on (or
ideally prior to) arrival might have been a good plan.

This isn’t the Referee’s problem any more than it would be for a
parks Referee when a Sunday League team fields a ringer or a
suspended player. The teams submit team sheets and it’s not up
to the officials to confirm eligibility to play in the game.

Though, presumably, in the case of the Argentine players, if one
of the referees decided that their safety was in question
because of the players on the team sheet, then they would be
within their rights not to officiate the game?

Yes, like not letting someone who is still drunk on the Sunday
morning from the night before take the field. Unfortunately it
is not quite so obvious that someone should be in quarantine.
The automatic assumption being that the authorities have been
doing their jobs before the game starts.

Wouldn't the Argentinian FA be a national organisation rather
       than an international organisation?
