I have no problems with Mr Allison and it may be that he can do
far better than his performance in this match. We have all seen
referees rise to a level they are not capable of dealing with
and I hope this will not happen to him, but he must improve IMO.
I used to go home after matches and have a quiet time reflecting
on the game I had just refereed including whether there was
anything I could have done to avoid any sendings off….I hope Mr
Allison does the same.

OK, let me turn this round then. What would you have done
differently to prevent the sendings off? He is right on the
spot, gets in there quickly, and from what I can see gets all of
the sanctions spot on. As a referee you can't force players to
behave themselves, and this was a fairly typical flashpoint. In
front of the technical areas (the 3rd penalty area), two players
disagree after a challenge, others pile in, TA's get involved.
Had that occurred close to the opposite touchline I doubt any
cards would have been necessary as it probably wouldn't have
happened.

I hope I would have carried a better attitude into the game,
kept nearer to play and not been random in my award of free
kicks. I would also hope that I would not have given a player a
second caution without sending him off, this caused a major
flashpoint at the end. Once the chaos had started he was quite
right to stand back and observe, there was no way he could have
done otherwise, but from around 80 minutes a sending off became
predictable and it was a surprise that it was only for two
yellows. I was told when things get tetchy in a match there was
a need to be near to play to keep on top of it. Of course I
accept that that was 30 years ago and I get the impression now
that the diagonal we used to run is now a furrow down the middle
and maybe there are other instructions on how to referee of
which I am unaware but man management should still be an
essential part,

Can i offer this coaching advice. I would have liked the referee
to seperate the teams far better. Rugby Union referees do this
really well. Then in this occasion call the players to you and
issue cards once all the information has been written down so
the referee and assistants are aware of who is on a 2nd. This
also creates time for players to calm down.
Write on cards would be great option, you can see who has been
cautioned while the card is in the air and less chance of
forgetting a second YC into RC

While I agree in principle, it's much easier to do in rugby as
the majority of the players will be separated anyway as that's
how the teams line up formation-wise. And let's face it,
football players simply do not listen to the officials like
rugby players do.

I am sure the current advice on officials sorting out melees is
as it has been for many years, in other words, watch what's
going on but don't get involved. The days of Norman Burtenshaw
lying face down in the mud separating warring players have long
gone. To that end, Sam and his team acted in accordance with
current protocols. I agree with you Wollongong Ref that it would
be a good idea for numbers to be noted when yellow cards are
issued, and I'm surprised that this doesn't seem to happen.
Irrelevant but I recall a game in the 1970s when, following a
mass melee, the ref sent the players to opposite ends of the
pitch (accompanied by an AR) to cool off whilst he issued cards
to the ringleaders. A good idea and it worked on that occasion
but I suspect it was not something that was ever likely to
happen at Shrewsbury last weekend!

I think Allison followed procedure correctly and it should be
remembered that he is quite new at this level of football and
with experience comes authority. This for me was the key point.
He just didn't look, by his body language and movement, that he
was at all in control of the situation. He didn't appear to
impose himself upon the proceedings to stop them escalating.
That said it is incredibly difficult, unless one has built up a
good reputation and achieved some respect at a higher level, to
do much about it if players and benches are determined to
misbehave. It would be very instructive to see how Mike Dean or
Martin Atkinson would conduct themselves in such a situation but
even they, no doubt, at the beginning of their League careers
would have had moments where they might look a bit lost.
I have been told that one of the things which impressed the
authorities about Bobby Madley was not so much his technical
refereeing but the fact that he had an air of authority about
him from very early days. So, some possess it more naturally
than others but as I have said many times on this Forum, there
is no substitute for experience.

I recall Josh Smith at Plymouth and David Rock at Crewe being
roundly criticised on RTR (David by myself) for performances in
L2 in their early days on the FL list. Both have progressed
since then with experience, Josh in particular, and my hope is
that Sam will progress in the same way.
