       PL Opening Weekend officiating

Have never been a fan of Riley or the PGMOL but credit where
credit is due this weekend’s officiating has been superb it has
made the matches so much more enthralling and gripping. Would
probably only say the penalty decision at Newcastle was
incorrect but apart from that outstanding let’s hope it stays
       like this throughout the season.

I concur with the above post also the fact referees have been
told to let the game flow has made such a big difference and the
use of VAR has been minimal , I to applaud Mike Riley for the
       way he has handled it

I totally agree with all of it, and having fans back has helped
       enormously.

A couple of minor things aside, I would agree that it has been a
very good start. The VAR checks we have had have been much
quicker, and the interventions have been less numerous. Let's
hope that we've finally found the right balance, and along with
the return of crowds, we'll have a very exciting season ahead.
AFARef, the Football League returned last week, but this weekend
was the first Premier League weekend - for which the original
       post was referring too.

If only he'd had the wit to figure it out himself rather than
have to be shown the way by the Euros.

And there has been some real dross in the EFL thus far in
       comparison….

Given as all SG1 and SG2 refs are professional (vast majority
full time), being trained by same organisation, would you not
expect the tone of matches/allowances made etc would be the
       same?
Its not just about VAR, it definitely seemed a shift in mindset
       this weekend.

Pleasantly surprised that Mr Riley has leant in this direction
given his personality of being so pernickety and officious as a
referee. But credit to him for realising the issues last season
and attempting to solve most of them.
I’d say a couple of decisions where the ‘softly’ approach for
VAR went too far was the Burnley push in the back for their
first goal that I think was a clear foul, and the West Ham
penalty which I think VAR should probably be overturning (and I
say this as a West Ham fan!)
Apart from that so far so good, the free flowing nature has been
       refreshing!

I agree that the VAR intervention line has been much better -
finally, it seems that PGMOL VARs understand the 'vision' that
they are meant to execute in the games and as a consequence,
restarts for checks are much quicker. And that can only be a
good thing! (we can discuss the Newcastle vs. West Ham penalty,
but to disallow the Burnley vs. Brighton goal would be a tragedy
       IMO).
As for the thesis for match control, I can't really agree - this
is 100% WC 2014 approach; a very cheap way to make the games
more exciting. And, personally, I can't find that good for
       football, nor refereeing.
I rest assured that I'm probably in a minority of one here. :)
