All 4th officials are PL refs too, the only exception being
James Linington at Chelsea.

As a referee Lee Mason never seemed to be trusted with regular
appointments. Now he has retired to become the PGMOL’s 1st
“specialist 4thO” he does not appear in the 1st round of games.
Am I reading too much into this?

Yes, I think the 3 SG1 refs not involved are likely unavailable
for some reason.
It seems a bit strange not to have any SG1 refereeing in EFL
considering the size of group but perhaps they want to give
everyone experience of PL given some changes in VAR
interpretation etc, especially with them being 3 down which is
probably the number you'd normally expect in EFL.
Hopefully likes of England, Madley and Jones will get
opportunities soon. I think there should be less of Friend and
Moss, amongst others, this year.

hopefully Jarred Gillett, Michael Salisbury, Tony Harrington and
John Brooks will get a premier league game as the season
progresses
